Details:
âNatalia Paruz is among the few so blessedâ¦summoning haunting music from quivering steel. The saw trembles, as if in awe of a fortunate woman doing what she was meant to do.â
- New York Times
â â⦠Natalia Paruz, who is a master of the instrumentâ¦excels at the tenor, baritone and French musical saws as well as at playing 36 pitched Austrian
cowbellsââ¦Paul Lustig Dunkel, conductor and music director of the Westchester Philharmonic, said⦠âShe was great.â â
- New York Times
âBest Reason To Miss The N Train - Saw Ladyâ¦when youâre lucky enough to catch Natalia Paruz, a/k/a the Saw Lady, a gross-smelling Union Square
station suddenly becomes more appealing than your living room. Paruzâs warped and wonderful musical-saw performances are completely mesmerizing - thereâs something about the way the music swirls that makes you feel completely weightless and serene. Paruz puts so much feeling into the way she bends notes, whether sheâs playing Mozart or âTwinkle, Twinkle Little Star,â and her sunny smile could soften the hardest heart.â
- Village Voice
âThe cantataâs powerful final scene features the musical saw (Natalia Paruz) - superb playing.â
- New Music Connoisseur
ââ¦Natalia Paruzâ¦a soulful, beatific presence as she renders classical pieces on her carpenterâs sawâ¦â
- Back Stage
ââ¦Natalia is a gifted player of the musical sawâ¦(her) renditions of classics such as Ave Maria and Peace on Earth are stirring and serene. On (her Christmas) CD Paruz has truly captured the voice of peace.â
- Ins & Outs
âThere are those who have been lucky enough to hear Natalia Paruz playing her instrument, the musical saw⦠And then there are those who havenât â and they probably donât know what theyâve been missing, but they should. Paruz gets the musical saw to sing in tones that are at once eerie yet strangely soothing, but never, ever dull⦠She does add a little extra variety with pitched handbells (which are stunning) and pitched cowbells (ditto)⦠The sound is superb, the vibe is engaging and downright hypnotic, and the effect is stunning.â
- AllMusic
âNatalia Paruz has a surefire way to make people stop and watchâ¦.She is very good. This is very special.â
- Daily News
âThe expression on her listenersâ faces range from stunned wonder to delight.â
- Daily News
ââ¦If you need a lift in your day, check out the âsaw-ladyâ, Natalia Paruz, on Youtube playing Bachâs plaintive organ chorale âI cry to Thee, Jesus Christâ in the New
York City subway. This Heifetz of the jagged blade made her Carnegie Hall debut last year.â
- Counter Punch
ââ¦This being vaudeville, there was also a musical saw number, soothingly performed by Natalia Paruz.â
- New York Times
ââ¦Natalia plays as seriously, intently and confidently as if she were the first violinist for a philharmonic orchestra.â
-The Resident
âNatalia is a deeply talented, humble musicianâ¦â
-The Deli, NYC music magazine
âA pretty gal playing beautiful musicâ
- Cindy Adams, NY Post
THE USE OF THE CARPENTERâS saw as a musical instrument goes back hundreds of years. The discovery of its musical capabilities is not indigenous to a particular part of the world, but rather was made wherever hand saws were used for carpentry. The properties a saw possesses for creating a tone
are natural to its makeup. At first people struck the saw with a mallet to produce a tone. Later people discovered a string-instrumentâs bow can be drawn on the non-serrated edge.
Nataliaâs goal is not only to preserve the rare art form of playing music on a saw, but also to push it forward through the invention of better playing
techniques, educating composers about the possibilities of composing for saw, and bringing the instrument to greater public awareness. Natalia has commissioned a number of new works for musical saw from contemporary composers, many of which are recorded here for the first time (tracks 2â8). These works present the saw in a variety of chamber music settings, elevating the saw to the status of a regular musical instrument and not just a novelty.
NATALIA âSAW LADYâ PARUZ has spent over a decade bringing the rare art form of playing music on a carpenterâs saw to audiences around the world.
She performed with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta, with the Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Air Moroccan Symphony Orchestra, the Riverside Orchestra, the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, the Amor Artis Orchestra and at Lincoln Centerâs Avery Fisher Hall with
PDQ Bach composer Peter Schickele and with the Little Orchestra Society.
November 2007 marked her Carnegie Hall debut as a musical saw soloist and June 2008 marked her Madison Square Garden debut.
Television appearances include FOX5 (Good Day New York), ABC (Good Morning America), MTV (Andy Milonakis Show), VH1 (Behind the Music), History
Channel (Tool Box), PBS (Music Under New York - Emmy award winner), MSG (NYC Soundtracks - Emmy award winner).
Film appearances include Dummy with Adrian Brody. Nataliaâs saw can be heard on the soundtracks of films such as El Carnaval Sodoma/ Arthuro
Ripstein, I Sell the Dead, American Carny, and Another Earth.
Radio performances include NPR (A Prairie Home Companion), WNYC, WFMU, XM Satellite Radio & WBAI.
Natalia received citations of honor from the New York City Council, the New York State Senate and a medal of honor from Paris, France.
She was chosen by Time Out New York, the Village Voice, the New York Press and the New York Resident for their Best of New York lists, and was
featured in articles by the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Daily News, Newsday and Metro New York.
Natalia has recorded on Capitol Records, Universal Records and Atlantic Records with such artists as John Hiat, and is mentioned in ten books including City Lights: Stories About New York/New York Times writer Dan Barry, St. Martinâs Press and New York Curiosities: Quirky Characters, Roadside Oddities &
Other Offbeat Stuff/Globe Pequot.
Nataliaâs musical saw has been heard on TV commercials, including spots for Volvo, Motorola, Chex Mix & California Cheese.
