Gareth Bernard Hunter, (born 16 March 1973), is an American musician, song-writer, composer, producer, and philanthropist. Prior to his first composing contract at age 19 with H&H Records (a branch of A&M Music), Gareth was known to many as a child prodigy. He began playing bongos and other percussion instruments in his fatherâs band at age three. By age four he competed in his first national competition in Denver Colorado, placing third amongst adult competitors. Gareth remarked of that time in his life as âsimply the most influencing, musically shaping time of my life. Every note I compose was shaped by the raw innocence and explorative nature of the music at that time.â
By age 17, Gareth had traveled numerous cities and states as a featured drummer often playing along to audio tracks for small club appearances or national television audiences. Some of his highlight child performances are the Today Show (age 10), The Army Times Magazine (age 8), Florida State University Jazz Band (age 7), as well as all region and all state bands in high school. It would be during this stage of Garethâs life that his greatest influences would come in the form of the music he played and his introduction to more structured musical programs. âI was introduced to piano by way of receiving the task to play bells and xylophone in middle school band. I hated the task and saw it as a demotion. However, within a month I was hooked on all things melodic and soon found my way to a pianoâ.
After accepting a full music scholarship to Georgia Southwestern State University, Garethâs composing skills were brought to the attention of Clinton Harris Sr. of A&M Music. Harris was responsible for shaping many careers in his more than 20 year stint as a promoter and A&R rep for Janet Jackson, Shanice Wilson, Barry White and more. Gareth left his scholarship behind and relocated to Birmingham, AL under the tutelage of Dennis Monfort with Clinton Harris Sr. overseeing. After two years of composing for artists and projects that seemed to receive solid reviews but were never promoted properly, Gareth teamed with a young investor, Emmanuel Walton, to produce an Independent release. âRound and Roundâ, although released regionally (Georgia) in December of 1994, would reach as far away as Vietnam within six months of its debut. âI never thought being unprepared for success could be more damaging than being unprepared for failure until that song took offâ. Gareth says of that time, âat age 21, I was still so green, so immature, that I missed out on thousands of dollars in sales, publishing, and became easy game for the hustlers of the businessâ. After the tragic death of Walton, Gareth regrouped his career and would enjoy the next several years recording and performing with many artists including Jeff Floyd, the CraigLewis Band, and Clarence Carter to name a few. His success with âRound and Roundâ led to more production work with artists signed to Jive Records, Def Jam Records, etc. It was at this time that Gareth also began his introduction into philanthropy through mentoring, apprenticeships to his projects, and work with multi-cultural organizations as a guest speaker and organizer.
Currently Gareth has reconnected with longtime associates and friends CraigLewis (currently performing in Tyler Perryâsâ âMadeaâs Big Family Reunionâ) for an independent release entitled âWhat Do You Doâ. Written by Jeff Lewis, composed by Gareth Hunter and Leonard Tyson, and produced by Gareth, âWhat Do You Doâ marks his debut as label figure as well as Executive Producer. â Itâs a return to my roots by combining forces with the artists that gave me my initial success as well as the man that mentored me as a composer at age 18â said Gareth when asked about his feelings on the pressure of an independent return. âWhat Do You Doâ marks the beginning of a well planned three project release including âA Mothers Loveâ (April 2011) which is slated to raise funds for organizations fighting Child Trafficking and Child Prostitution. Gareth actually delayed release and placement with a major artist after learning of the child trafficking epidemic spreading through Atlanta, GA. When asked why he would want to make such a donation of time, money, and product, Gareth responded, âif the only thing I am ever known for is providing one extra bed for one of these young girls to safely rest in, then my little talent has served its true purpose of serving mankindâ.
Outside of his devotion to his craft, Gareth enjoys time as a family man often in a private setting at home. In his leisure time he is passionate about soaking up the music scenes in Atlanta, Philadelphia, and New York City to name a few. âMusic is not a profession to me; itâs simply my way of life. I will absorb it into my very being until thereâs nothing left of me.â
Gareth promises to deliver to the world a reemergence of the tradition of music as a heartfelt art form as it was intended, as it was first birth to do.
