Ancient Universal is an electronic artist from Southern California, United States. Ancient Universal consists solely of singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Hernandez and was formed in 2009. On the downtime between recordings with alternative rock group Stonehedge (of which Hernandez is still a member of), Hernandez spent much of his free time writing new songs. Combining a mixture of guitar riffs, punchy synths, and gripping melodies, the eclectic debut album became a project of exploration in songwriting. With a new synthesizer and some songs that were floating around as thoughts, he chipped away at what would become Blended Blue.

Blended Blue is the self-recorded debut album by Ancient Universal. Recorded using modest equipment and some scattered pieces of arrangements, Hernandez wanted to create an album that would be âglued mostly by strong melodyâ (Hernandez, 2011). The album includes songs that are old and new for Hernandez. Old recordings of "No Shine" can be dated as far back as 2004. âLunar Aerosolâ was originally an acoustic song with vocals that became the first song on the album to have a lead melody played by a synthesizer. Some of the songs including the dance-hit âRevolution of the Saneâ have politically charged lyrics.

Musical Style

Although classified as an electronic artist because a lot of the sounds are electronically programmed, Ancient Universal also ventures into sounds that are more acoustic-based. Songs like âNo shineâ and âAzulâ solidify his influence of folk music and acoustic singer/songwriter styles. Songs like âRevolution of the Saneâ and âVoodooâ are the most electronic: dance and dub. âStardust Vehicleâ and âLunar Aerosolâ have a strong sense of downtempo influence. Also, by plucking a live bass on some of the tracks and strumming live electric/acoustic guitars, the organic richness of the sound balances the electronic pulses of spacey synths.
