Details:
The first album by collaborators Adam Law and Jeffrey Hunt would come to fruition through a friendship that began as mutual sales personnel at a local music store (Richmond Music Center) in 2002. AL, an upcoming guitarist and JH, a bassist relocated from upstate New York worked together for a year or so before AL would head to college and JH changed jobs. Their paths would not cross again until late 2007.
By this time AL had already cut his first solo record called âThe Nth Degreeâ. Utilizing an Acid Pro software program and a miked TSL 122 Marshall his regular schedule of writing and recording throughout college had additionally established a rich stock of unused song ideas and miscellaneous riffs. JHâs path also took him into a variety of sonic and technical spaces, capturing solo compositions and various live collaborations primarily to minidisc. His bass play had now spanned into electric upright.
The two would set a date to jam with ALâs younger brother on drums (Jared) and record the experience. The tapes appeared strong. Soon AL and JH began meeting regularly to begin organizing some of the residual structures and incorporating ALâs archive of late recordings. As time would show, many of his demos had promise so the priority became sorting what would be refined, built upon or remain at rest. With a about half an albumâs worth of material developing, the more frequent sessions would be split between writing new arrangements and smartening up the existing ones.
Momentum slowed in 2009. In February JH completed his first solo recording â a dark, instrumental album entitled âCurative Wayâ. The following month he was asked to co-produce a local bandâs album which would span through December. Towards the end of this time however, AL was brought in to add some guitar tracks and hence the AL/JH relationship with local engineer, Bill McElroy (of Slipped Disc Studios) solidified. Once the project ended the two stepped up their writing schedules, defined the concept for the album, aligned recording programs, traded files and agreed on how, where and with whom the pending record would be done.
Final demos were sent to three separate drummers in late April of 2010 followed by some Q&A conference calls to discuss approaches. The end of May (5/27, 30) found ALâs brother Jared and JHâs friend Shane (of BenT PeG) at Slipped Disc to cut drums and rhythm guitars for 8 of the planned 12 tracks. On the same weekend samples were recorded with Shane on electric pads, but at JHâs house (now referred to as Curative Way). Drums for the final 3 songs and an additional djembe track, were performed by JHâs older brother Aaron (of Sinzibukwood) in a new Rochester studio called Synergy Studios (6/6) run by a young engineer name Mike Miller. Once finished, the drum tracks were compiled, most guitar tracks were rerecorded at both ALâs place (christened as 60-Cycle Sound) and Curative Way along with all of the bass parts. The final renderings were brought back to Bill in August and the three spent five nights and a short morning mixing (8/19, 22-24, 26 & 9/13). The album would then be mastered by Bill for a November 2010 release.
