BLUEPRINT
What do the statements "a diamond sliding down a velvet ribbon" and "un vrai joyau atmospherique, un marriage subtile de l'acoustique et de l'electrique" have in common? Give up? Well, they are both reviews of Martins track "Pure Azure" from the CD "BLUEPRINT". Tracks from this CD occupied at various times the top three spots in the smooth jazz, latin jazz and easy listening (oh dear-street credibility zero) charts at www.peoplesound.com for over 24 months.
TRACK 01: - Curvaceous (4.05)
Can you feel that funk! A close relative of "Luscious and Peachy" on my second CD "Eyewitness" - it has the same drums, the same organ, the same chords (just kidding!). A track inspired by Larry Carlton.
TRACK 02: - Jalapeno Fever (3.17)
A samba vibe, get the cocktails, barbecue and limbo bar out. Excellent lead guitar work said "Sound on Sound" in their review in September 2002. They also said the guitar work on this sounded a lot like Mr S. I bet you can guess who they meant.
TRACK 03: - Pure Azure (3.35)
This is the track that sounds like "a diamond sliding down a velvet ribbon" and "un vrai joyau atmospherique, un marriage subtile de l'acoustique et de l'electrique". Played live with the band "Azure" on a number of occasions and still a favourite of mine, but then again I did write it. Over 6000 downloads to date, so somebody else likes it as well.
TRACK 04: - Shiver (4.31)
Definitely smooth jazz in the house, lots of piano before the guitar jumps in, in an unsmooth jazz way. "Sound on Sound" gave big thumbs up to the piano on this track.
TRACK 05: - Sea Breeze (3.34)
In the key of "C" in case the title hadn't given it away. This is another smooth jazzer that reminds me of sitting with a cool beer, watching the sunset over the ocean. It doesn't often happen in Manchester though unfortunately.
TRACK 06: - Moonstruck (3.50)
A slowish number with acoustic simulation on the verse guitar (unfortunately not as exciting as it sounds). I think the outro's the best bit if you're remotely interested.
TRACK 07: - Dancescape (3.35)
Four to the bar bass drum, acoustic bass, rock organ, harmony guitar - bring it on!
TRACK 08: - Jazz Mags (2.48)
As jazzy as a jazz thing on a very jazzy day, this is the jazziest of them all, probably the first and last time that I'll record anything quite like this. Inspired by a pattern on the Yamaha QY700.
TRACK 09: - Windswept (4.48)
A nod towards George Benson, think "Breezin" for the rhythm and you'd be on the right lines. A Yamaha acoustic piano solo precedes the un Benson like guitar solo.
TRACK 10: - Blueprint (4.19)
One of the first tracks recorded for the CD this uses a Korg distortion on the solo rather than my usual Boss set up. The guitar on this is my trusty blue Ibanez RG548 veteran of 400 plus gigs. Pay attention at the back I may be asking questions about these riveting facts later.
TRACK 11: - Barcaloner (3.43)
No it's not spelt wrong (If I had a pound for every time someone pointed that out then...). It's got a "hot and sunny get up and dance and make a fool of yourself on holiday" feel with plenty Latin percussion and a cleanish lead guitar break.
TRACK 12: - Funky Fishfood (4.41)
A chord progression I had written many moons ago that came to life when I wrote the melody. Definitely influenced by listening to lots of Jazz FM in the car. Bits of guitar, but no guitar solo in the middle of this one, which makes it unique for me, a mistake never to be repeated again, I promise.
TRACK 13: - Hindsight Theory (4.35)
Smooth jazz influences all over this one, piano on the verse melody lines and even an organ solo that doubles with bass at one point. I can hear you saying, "you smooth jazzer Martin" or something along those lines.
TRACK 14: - Hypnotix (4.24)
A marimba melody line plus lots of delay on the start of the guitar solo gives this a hypnotic feel. What a coincidence, look at the title.
TRACK 15: - Chill Factor (6.14)
A medium paced chilled out groove, at least that's the kind of thing they put in magazine reviews.
TRACK 16: - Cool Blue (4.42)
Written originally as a more uptempo number I slowed it down prior to recording for a funkier feel. The cool blue of the title is the "turquesa mar". Lordy, lordy take me there and drop me in the water.
TRACK 17: - A Secret For You (5.37)
A widescreen cinematic feel to close the CD - well it's a bit film(ish), with a laid back vibe and lots of strings. Probably my favourite track on the CD.
