Who is Davenport Johnson?

Actually, theyâre two guys you donât know. And you donât need to know really, what you probably want to know about is the music. But for curiosity seekers weâll tell you that theyâre brothers. One worked in comedy and advertising, the other became a professor at a leading university. Theyâve been playing music together for almost two decades, but because their vocations kept them separated, only once a year... or twice if they were lucky.

When they were able to get together they just jammed. No objective but to have fun. It started with two guitars, but eventually one of them became a uke-aholic. Suddenly the jams were turning into songs... and recording seemed like the logical next step. Their first CD/EP âSquinchâ is the result.

From the toe-tapping ukulele duet âMonkey Washing Cat,â that brings to mind an acoustic Grateful Dead, to the all out electric Neil Young-ish wail of âSquinch,â each song is played like they mean it. âCuz they do. Itâs all about conveying emotion.

When asked what kind of music they play, they usually say itâs âin the style of ourselves,â but their marketing consultant suggested that wasnât a very advertise-able category.

So you can call it a rootsy, folky American blend... like back porch music, or kitchen table tunes, where the feeling is not so much Lo-Fi as it is No-Fi. Jazzy, rocking duets, trios and quartets on strings. Just ukuleles & guitars.

The consultant still thinks they need a simpler description, but theyâre stickinâ with this for now. ;-)
