A little about myself. I was born in Kalamazoo, MI in 1977 on a warm summer day--at least I assume it was warm because it was August 5th. My family lived in a few different places in Michigan (running from the law and all), ending up in Detroit until I was in 8th grade. My mom made me start taking piano lessons when I was five, for which I thank her to this day. I don't remember a ton about my childhood (experts say that means it was healthy). I do remember that once I lit a whole book of matches on fire in my room and got in trouble for that. I don't recommend that. If my parents are reading this, of course I am kidding about running from the law.
In 8th grade my family moved to Greenville, SC, a beautiful city with great restaurants, affordable golf courses, and a very accessible airport. My parents were both schoolteachers in the school that I graduated from--Southside Christian School. I went away to Cedarville University in Ohio (land of wind and rain) to get my degree in Church Music, graduating in 1998. I highly recommend Cedarville--my time there was outstanding! Check it out-- www.cedarville.edu
Since 1998 I have been back in Greenville at a church called Southside Fellowship serving in the worship ministry. Since 2002 I have been the Worship Pastor--it's incredible to be allowed to have a job that is also your passion. I have an amazing team around me, and we are having a blast creating worship gatherings for our people.
My favorite person in the world is my wife, Whitney! I knew her in high school, but she didn't realize what a stallion I would grow into. After college we both moved back to Greenville, and after spending some time together in community theatre (long story), we knew our hearts were very compatible. She attended Bryan College in TN for a couple of years and completed her music education degree at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. She teaches voice and piano lessons from home. Things I love about her--she can cook anything in the world, she makes a beautiful Christmas tree, is a deep thinker, a lover of God, has showed perseverance through sickness and tough times in her life, is crazy about animals, and you won't find a more loving wife anywhere!
Hobbies and interests: Playing golf with my best friend Jason, jumping around with my dog Onyx, bashing a tennis ball around, eating food (really any kind--from fast food to gourmet), going to the movies by myself, songwriting, Xbox, and Internet chess.
Musical: Piano/keyboards have been my love since I was five years old. I love playing around with new keyboards--hearing all the sounds. I started strumming acoustic guitar in high school. Right now it's my favorite thing--I really enjoy how you can influence the rhythm of a whole band with it. I would love to get into electric guitar soon and bother the neighbors! I appreciate the diversity of just about every style of music and love to listen and explore. The cool thing is we'll never arrive--there is always a ton more to learn. I have been writing songs for the past 4-5 years, trying to find some new expressions for our church in our gatherings.
May God give us a greater desire to know Him and worship Him-- Matt
