Details:
With a voice that rings reminiscent of Bill Janovitz or Elvis Costello, and at times Bruce Springsteeen, Mark Bates is a growing beacon of hope on the Boston music scene. Mark creates a unique blend of melodic power pop and alt-country to bring a fresh sound to a sometimes stale music scene.
In May 2006 Mark Bates released his second solo album, âWish I Was Thereâ, and his first release since the break up of Catapult nearly two years ago. âWish I Was Thereâ showcases a more âmodernâ Mark Bates. From songs like âCanât Forget (Away)â and âSatellite #2â that bring the rock, to the sweet acoustic yearning of â(Wonât) You Come Home?â, to the electronic mayhem that is âDo You Ever Smile?â the album takes the listener through one heart stopping emotion after another.
Although produced by Mark Bates, "Wish I Was There", had a lot of help from some of Boston's best musicians. Former Catapult band mates Karl Haas and Erick Ellison both lend their talents to the record, with Karl playing drums on a majority of it. Other Boston heavy-weights, such as, Scamper, Chris Toppin (Fuzzy, Bathing Beauties), Tom Polce (Letters To Cleo, Crown Victoria), and Bill Janovitz (Buffalo Tom, Crown Victoria) all pitched in to make the album the most memorable album of Mark's career.
