Pretty Mess is the first offering from Detroit Singer-Songwriter Maren Coleman, whose voice and songwriting have often garnered comparisons to Patty Griffin and Lori McKenna. Relatively new to the troubadour racket, Maren spent most of her early twenties doing the âbartender thingâ while trying to figure out what the hell to do with her life. Although she had always loved to sing and once had ambitions of a career in musical theatre, she stopped writing and playing out sometime during her early twenties in turn for a more âstableâ lifestyle. She went to school periodically; flip flopping majors, and tending bar to pay the bills. After a series of failed relationships and half attempts at going to college, Maren realized that the only thing she had going for her was the one thing she was the most afraid of pursuing⦠her music. So one day she quit her job, picked up her guitar, and started writing.


Written and recorded at home, Pretty Mess is an honest, bare bones debut that started out as a series of scratch recordings and developed into something more. It is as smooth as a polished stone and as rough as concrete. Her voice has that plaintive quality that makes you want to listen for hours and sing along. Her lyrics are simple without being trite. With no post-production to hide behind, Marenâs natural talent shines through on this debut release.
