The Mariachis? Mexican Musicians? Spanish Troubadours? Tortillas?
No.
This West London based band hails from all corners of the British Isles, from the plains of Norfolk right up to the Lancashire mill town of Oswaldtwistle. Perhaps this reflects the eclectic range of musical influences, which bring together a refreshing sound that blends gorgeous three part harmonies with strong storytelling and heartfelt lyrics.
The Mariachis are Richard Evans (Singer, Songwriter, Rhythm Guitar), Tim Marsden (Lead Guitar, Vocals), Siân Owen (Keyboards, Vocals), Iain Harris (Bass Guitar), and Henry Gwynne (Drums).
Richard, the band's main songwriter spent a year in Japan and a year in America, mostly Nashville, writing and performing before coming back to the UK where he hooked up with Tim at University. The band has been in its present form since May 2004.
This band has already built up an impressive resume and a solid reputation on the London Circuit over the past six months, including the thrill of supporting Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings to a crowd of 8000 at a Bastille Day Festival in Pont Audemer, France. This has lead to regular airplay in France and Switzerland.
The summer of 2005 will see the Mariachis play to thousands at the Blue Balls Festival, Switzerland, the main stage at the Binic Rock Festival, France and various venues in London and the South East.
The Mariachis recently recorded their new EP 'Kicking Through The Cinders', which is due for release on June 27th. "Condolences", included on the EP, features on the forthcoming album 'Independent - the Best of Matchbox Recordings', released through Universal Distribution.
Recording sessions have been booked for August with well-known producer Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers/Catatonia/Kennedy Soundtrack...).
Breaking news - Bob Harris loves the EP and will be playing 'Kicking Through...' on Radio 2 for the first time this Saturday night. Richard Allinson is playing 'Condolences' on his show.
Forthcoming gigs include -
National Theatre, South Bank - An open air gig on June 29th.
SW1 Festival, London - July 16
Blue Balls Festival, Switzerland - July 26th
Four shows at the Binic Festival, France, including a main stage set - August 3rd - 6th.
City Showcase, Oxford Street - 5th 7th September
The Netherlands - Dates to be confirmed.
