Makuini
Makuini (pronounced MaQueenie)
Her story starts in the small village of Jerusalem, in New Zealand where she was born and brought up surrounded by a talented family, who were instrumental in developing her lifelong love of jazz and theatre.
She grew up hearing such greats as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Mavis Rivers, New Zealandâs legendary jazz singer.
Festivals and competitions followed, winning a Maori Educational Foundation Grant, allowing her to study with the world renowned teacher, Dame Sister Mary Leo, tutor to international greats such as Dame Kiri Te Kawana and Dame Malvina Major.
Appearances in television dramas, light entertainment programs and radio all followed. An accomplished cabaret entertainer, her singing and dancing established Makuini as a multi talented performer in her native country.
Eventually she decided to move to the UK to further her career, performing en route in Fiji, Samoa, Cook Islands, Tahiti, Hawaii and Los Angeles prior to making her home in England for the last 22 years.
Arriving in the UK , Makuini was cast opposite Yul Brynner in the âKing & Iâ at the London Palladium. Five Royal Command performances followed and a Royal Variety Show for her Majesty the Queen. Makuini has gone on to
perform with a list of such diverse stars as Boney M, The Drifters, Elaine Stritch, James Galway, Hinge & Brackett, Millicent Martin, Virgin McKenna, Marti Caine, Carol Channing, Les Dawson, Bill Haley and Sir Cliff Richard - a list any performer can be proud of.
Then came a role in the film âGlory Boysâ with Rod Steiger and Anthony Perkins.
Over the past few years Makuini has presented her one-woman show âLadies of Soulâ throughout the UK, Malta, Tenerife, Cyprus, Dubai and on Cruise ships around the Mediterranean, Caribbean and America, all with great success and popular and critical acclaim.
In addition to the other credits and achievements, Makuiniâs teaching diploma
from Victoria College of Music, London, makes her a much sought after vocal coach with performers and singers alike. Itâs her great love of jazz that has her collaborating with Tom Pilling on her new album âLet it Flowâ
