Memphis musician brings art back to album making

Memphis has always been revered as the music town that keeps a roof over the blues and gave birth to rock nâ roll. Although many music groups from this area have sparked the interest of leaders in the industry, acts have forgotten that album making is an art that doesnât end with the music. Music fans have lined up not only to buy the record for the music, but for the artwork that engulfed the tunes that they loved so genuinely. Not only has University of Memphis senior, Matt Isbell broken the mold for Memphis rock nâ roll, he has created a CD concept that, although some say is a gamble, is truly a unique and refreshing approach.

Matt Isbellâs new release Rock Lotto is a high voltage eclectic rock album, bringing a bevy of rock styles to the table. This CD has a âscratch offâ lotto ticket style song list where Rock Lotto listeners scratch off to win a free download of the bonus track by visiting www.myspace.com/mattisbell. The inside of the packaging takes the form of a slot machine that works in conjunction with the CD. Finally, a record that looks as good as it sounds and an artist that creates a complete album package. This album is bound to grasp the attention of major labels and will be a textbook example of how artists can still do something new. Rock Lotto was produced and recorded by Kevin Houston who also recorded Jim Dickinson, The North Mississippi All-stars and countless other award winning local and national released albums.

Rock Lotto is due to be released on November 30th with a CD release party at the Young Avenue Deli in Memphis, TN. Isbell has received nothing but positive feedback on his new creation and is only at the beginning of his rock nâ roll journey. âWith the band,â a soon to be classic rock anthem has already been hitting the Memphis airwaves with multiple plays on Rock 103 during drive time and on the local spotlight show, The Great Unsigned.

Although this is Mattâs first solo effort, this is the third full-length CD in which he has written all of the material. He has also been featured on some of the Inside Sounds compilations, including a feature spot on the cover of the upcoming November release, Fried Glass Onions- Memphis Rocks The Beatles. Dabbling in different styles has proven to create a unique and talented artist that is ready get his music, to music lovers of all kinds.


Matt Isbell has been a staple in the Memphis music scene for over ten years. As a singer/songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player, Isbell has performed as the guitarist for the STAX Rhythm Section (2002), The South Soul Rhythm Section, the front man for The Blind Venetians, the lead guitarist for The Venus Mission (a popular show band) and has performed on at least ten reputable CDs. As a senior in the Commercial Music/Music Business program at the University of Memphis, Isbell continues to create and be recognized by the music community.

Performing in front of audiences of more than ten thousand, Isbell has shared the stage with such artists as Todd Snider, The North Mississippi All-stars, Billy Gibson, Sinbad and at the ripe age of 25 has played shows from the Congressional Bunker in Greenbrier, W. Virginia to a number of venues in the greater Mid-South area.
