There are some thingsâglorious sunsets, our childâs first smile of recognition, a soft moonlit snowfallâthat are so pure, so sterling, they move us, sometimes indescribably but always undeniably.
Mary Smithâs voice is one of these. And a new CD, The Melody in MeâCelebrate the Season with Mary Smith, to be launched October 29th, showcases her unquestionable talent. Smithâs perfect pitch alto and impeccable phrasing wrap listeners in the warmth of a rich blanket of sound enhanced by accomplished musicians.
Often compared to the inimitable Anne Murray, Smith possesses an even broader range than Canadaâs original songbird. Smithâs lower register is velvet chocolate complimented by silvery upper ranges.
With no formal instruction beyond choir training, Mary Smith is a natural, someone with huge talent and a love of singing that lets her take a song and make it her own.
Her local church decided to produce a musical CD as a fundraiser which put Smith in a local recording studio.
This connection to a recording studio was instrumental in the solo CD Smith recorded in 2004."Music feeds my soul,â she says with a smile. Iâm doing what I love to do when I sing.â
âThere are four original pieces on the new CD written by Agnes-Marie Henderson of Listowel,â reports Smith. âSheâs the marvellous pianist and accompanist who did most of the arranging for the new CD.â
What Child is This is the only instrumental on The Melody in Me, performed beautifully by Henderson at the grand piano in her home.
Smith not only solos but also sings all the background harmonies for this stellar collection of new and old seasonal favourites.
Whether performing the smooth swing of Don Henleyâs Please Come Home for Christmas, the majestic love song The Melody in Me, the beautiful and traditional O Holy Night, or the happy romps of Sleigh Ride, Jingle Bell Rock and Santa Baby, Mary Smith ably demonstrates mastery of her instrumentâher brilliant voice.
Ronnie Hawkins in his documentary Last of the Good Olâ Boys (1989), said âIn my opinion, Anne Murray can sing a song as good as a song can be sung.â Well, Hawkins hasnât heard Mary Smith!
