Dark melodies haunt Bengt Walker's southern gothic debut, a tour de force of stripped-down songwriting reminiscent of Johnny Cash and Nick Cave. What Would Jesus Do will send chills down the spine, and a hush across the room.
9 MP3 Songs
COUNTRY: Traditional Country, ROCK: Americana
Details:
Bengt Walker wrote the songs that make up What Would Jesus Do? in a cabin on a decaying, Faulknerian plantation in rural South Georgia. The soul of this setting, at one time beautiful and haunting, infuse the album, a tour de force of sparse guitar work and resonant, booming vocals. A Southern Gothic Opera of a record, What Would Jesus Do? is essentially two albums in one. The first half consists of resonant, gospel-esque ballads, along the lines of traditional country musicians like Faron Young and Johnny Cash; while the second half picks up speed, incorporating drums and lead guitar to bring light to the bearded oak ringed graveyard that, for years, Bengt called home.
