Landis Maitland-Whitelaw
Composer/Guitarist
Landis was born in Prince George B.C. in 1950. He grew up between Burnaby B.C. and Calgary Alberta and resides in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. At the age of 13 he picked up the guitar for the first time and was given 3 yrs. of lessons. He quickly began to arrange popular piano pieces for the guitar. He returned to take a year of classical guitar lessons at the age of 21. From there on, he is self taught, taking the odd master class from touring classical guitarists, (Norbert Kraft, Don Wilson & Peter Mcallaster, Oscar Ghillia, and Alexandre Lagoya). His first composition, Sunshine, was written at the age of 18, and is his signature piece. He has played a classical hand built guitar by Claude Boucher of Quebec and Plays DâAddrio composite strings, on his Top Hat and Black Tie albums. Landis has since worked with Saskatoon Luthier Darrell PURA, to create a world class, classical guitar which he named the âRecitalistâ, it hosts a custom designed bridge and headstock, not to mention a series of other visual and functional features which Landis designed for Darrell, he currently tours with this instrument.
In his mid 30âs he studied music theory at the University of Saskatchewan. At this time he wrote a major work for solo guitar, a Fantasia on the theme, All Through the Night (Introduction, theme and Variations on a Lullaby). Since then he has written and arranged many works for solo guitar, duet, trio, band, small orchestra, choir, symphony, movie & video sound tracks, and a documentary film âSay Hello to Fredrickâ. He is the first local composer to write and perform a Guitar Concerto in Saskatoon. Landis was invited to play solo guitar for the visit of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales in Saskatoon Sask. 2001.
Landis currently has two recordings to his credit, the independent releases of:
TOP HAT & BLACK TIE. His recordings and his compositions have been played both nationally and internationally.
He can be heard on two other recordings: In-A-Chord by Danny MacDonald and Spirit Songs by Karen Scott Barss.
Landis is currently pursuing private studies under the direction of Dr. Thomas Schudel and has also studied with Dr. Monte Keene Pishny-Floyd and was inducted into the Canadian League of Composers in 2004.
