Prelude - 24 Hours: Park Hyatt Shanghai Vol. I
A little history . . .
A century ago in Paris Claude Debussy, Erik Satie and Maurice Ravel were redefining music composition, painting pictures with sound. They came to be known as âThe Impressionistsâ. A pivotal moment in this movement of creating âsound-scapesâ was at the 1889 Paris Biennale, when Debussy heard the first Javanese Gamelan Orchestra to ever perform in the West. Some say much of Debussyâs work from then on was defined by a quest to play âthe notes between the notesâ that these hypnotic brass gongs were capable of producing.
Just a couple of decades later on the other side of the world, Shanghai was blossoming into âThe Paris of the Eastâ, enjoying a heyday of romance and glamour as a coterie of âbelles chinoisesâ groomed on Chinese opera and folk tunes took to stage and screen performing their own sultry versions of Mandarin inflected big band swing and brooding tango pieces. Their legacy endures to this day as âthe Shanghai Divasâ in countless re-arrangements and remixes of the songs that defined this golden era.
Two brief but highly influential eras in music â each characterized by an unforeseen musical collision of East and West.
Today, we witness the arrival of Park Hyatt Shanghai, âa Modern Chinese Residenceâ, fusing the best of European and Chinese, traditional and ultra-contemporary, in a unique location overlooking the city that is fast reclaiming itâs title as one of the most exciting destinations in the world.
Drawing on the musical legacy of those French Impressionists and Shanghai Divas, âPreludeâ features new works from a hand picked group of composers and arrangers asked to create their own musical impressions of a couple of days in the life of Park Hyatt Shanghai. The pieces evolved into a soundtrack for two strangers meeting for the first time in this alluring property, and their internal dialog over the next few hours, all framed within the backdrop of Shanghai.
*
A chance encounter, a glance . . .
In Autumn 2008, Park Hyatt Shanghai opened its doors to friends and guests from Shanghai and abroad for the first time.
That same evening, one guest who had flown in from the other side of the world caught a glimpse of an elegant lady standing in a corner of the lounge wearing a dress adorned with a spray of peonies.
Prelude follows events and the internal story experienced by these two strangers from that brief moment when their eyes met across the room, the stolen moments during the ensuing eveningâs festivities and a brief second encounter in the midst of the crowd at a garden fete the next day, followed by the inevitable parting . . .
Who hasnât wondered, after a fleeting encounter with a stranger if, perhaps, this is the moment, the turning point, a glimpse of a future never imagined?
