S.O.U.L. ---Something Others Usually Lack, born Larry Andrews Jr. on January 24, blessed the earth with his mighty presence. Born in the urban flats of Jacksonvilleâs infamous Blodgett Home projects, he was raised with a great appreciation for music. His parents played an intricate role in his love for good music, constantly planting seeds of morale and culture in him that would bloom. His mother also sang in a church choir and performed with a traveling group. Meanwhile, his father, a multi-talented musician, played an array of instruments, and was known as âa one man bandâ that embedded the spark that would cause S.O.U.L. to later in life use his misfortunes to heal the world.
S.O.U.L. began writing at the tender age of 13 and never looked back. His music has a soulful yet still bee bop, hip hop feel accented with emotionally charged heartfelt lyrics. As a poet, solo artist, and member of several hip hop groups, he has worked in various music talents and producers, including Felon with Danny (Diamond D) Williams, Low T, and Mike Parker. In 2002, Danny Williams formed Naked Eye Productions which first featured S.O.U.L. as the lyricist of the group. While rapping and writing for this group S.O.U.L. discovered spoken word poetry and later created a poetry group named âThink Right Poetsâ with poetess Sabrina âTruthâ Hawkins. This was his first taste of âfreedomâ in creative expression as he found that the art of spoken word allowed him to articulate his thoughts more clearly and freely without any constraints. In 2005 S.O.U.L. joined Big Deal Entertainment where he wrote hooks with fellow group members of The Village, and soon realized his own potential as a major solo artist. For over five years he continued to hone his writing skills now he stands ready to begin a solo career as S.O.U.L.
Remember, this guy is not new to the performance arena. He has also worked with local and state representatives, media conglomerates such as the Blacksonville Community Network, and various community organizations speaking out against the ills society puts on women and the immediate need for an end to the senseless violence that plagues communities nationwide. You may have seen him at large scale events such as World of Nations and the Kumba Festival and underground venues throughout the southeast. But he is no stranger to leave a life saving message to the youth, be it at local schools, church or event seminars. A young man in his prime who not only talks the talk but who also walks the walk, S.O.U.L. is a father to six boys. Those who know S.O.U.L personally say that he speaks truth from his heart. What you hear in his music is exactly what you get in personâ¦passionâ¦persistenceâ¦and purpose. Something Others Usually Lack, a man dedicated to his family and his people.
S.O.U.L.âs music is an extension of his thoughts and feelings heâs faced as an African American male, hardships heâs encountered in life and family & relationship issues. Although he has never been involved with the law he has certainly been no stranger to harassment from the law as well as the government. Music and writing became his outlet to release his frustrations in a positive way. Writing has always been his best therapy.
Now on his first solo album, SOULPHANY, he shares âit feels like a breath of fresh air has entered from the heavensâ. The 2011 twelve track CD will feature a handful of classics previously released while underground with Big Deal Records, and a host of new music thatâs perhaps the most refreshing tornado to hit Hip Hop since Eric B and Rakim. Oh yeah, this one is sure to keep heads bopping from school to the workplace.
The artist known as S.O.U.L. is on a quest to make a change in the Hip Hop community. His future plan is to develop a multimedia Music Safe Haven for at risk youth seeking direction and mentoring to uncover their talent. He envisions a place where kids and families can come together to escape negative influences and receive proper guidance to make it in life.
Welcome to the world of S.O.U.L.!
