The Project: String Theory
This collection from veteran performers Perpetual Motion shows their growth from a folksy acoustic duo to a progressive jazz ensemble. Calling their new sound âacoustic world fusionâ, Perpetual Motion has created a vibrant blend of Central and South American folk, progressive jazz, blues, and rock and roll. The result is a wonderfully eclectic collection of songs, all tied together by an underlying latin groove.

This CD was recorded at Coloradoâs premier recording studio, Colorado Sound, with award winning engineer Steve Avedis at the helm. Each song was recorded live to capture the spontaneity, communication, and creative energy between these stellar musicians.

String Theory, or the âtheory of everythingâ, theorizes that if we could see past the subatomic level we would find that everything is made of strings of energy. These strings vibrate in all directions at once, like the strings of a guitar. Therefore, we are all vibrating in harmony together. Perpetual Motion brings this theory to life.

String Theory is sometimes called the âtheory of everythingâ. It is scienceâs attempt to find one explanation for how all things are tied together. If we could see past the subatomic level, to the smallest element of all things, some think we would find that everything is made of strings of energy. These strings vibrate in all directions at once, like the strings of a guitar. If we are all made of strings, we are all vibrating in harmony together.

During a three day period in the month of March 2005, these four musicians came together to create this album. It was recorded with a different technique than weâve used in the past. Each song was recorded live, so the spontaneity of the performance is kept intact. Each musicianâs sound was isolated, so we could record the best possible sound quality.
The creative energy was alive in the room, vibrating along with us. Unrehearsed musical moments were caught in a time capsule. Rather than four musicians recording their parts, we reached past individuality and became one.

Some overdubs were done, such as guitar solos and percussion tracks. The improvisations have primarily remained unaltered. If youâd like to know more about this recording project, visit our recording blog at www.perpetual-motion.net.

We enjoy exploring different styles of music. Our âstring theoryâ is that all styles of music are truly connected.


Writing instrumental music poses many challenges, one of which is to distinguish the songs from one another without lyrics. We like to keep things musically interesting by writing in different styles. The songs on this album are a mix of jazz, fusion, latin, blues and rock with many elements crossing over. All this is tied together by underlying latin rhythmic influences. Another challenge is coming up with titles. The musicâs initial inspiration will often give us ideas, or a title may come from a mental image or feeling we get while playing the song.

Double Expresso

Written as a perpetual motion, a musical piece comprised of constantly moving fast notes.
Like the pressure of modern life, rushing headlong, just on the verge of going out of control.

Jungle Spirits

Inspired by a trek through the jungles of Belize. The rain forest has a certain magic to it, as though you can feel the spirits of the Maya.

Toes In The Sand

Imagine yourself under a palm tree, a margarita in your hand, and your toes in the sand.

Zero Gravity

An excursion into the cosmos. Josie uses space as an element of her improvisation.

Terminal Velocity

Experimenting with a new guitar tuning, Tom wrote the main groove for this song. It has turned into a tribute to two of our favorite musicians, Jean-Luc Ponty and Brian May.

Pasión de la Luna Passion of the Moon

This song was inspired by a trip to Isla Mujeres, an island off the coast of Mexicoâs Yucatan peninsula, where we listened every night to traditional Central American folk music.

Big Red Blues

One of Tomâs early songs, written before the inception of Perpetual Motion.

Diverâs Dream

Inspired by a drawing Josie made of a guitar with a scuba diver on a reef within the sound hole. This is one of the songs we played as a duo at our first gig. Adding the rhythm section helped give it the Caribbean feel we wanted.
