About Michael McCrary

At the impressionable age of 9 years old, the baby sitter showed up with a Fender Stratocaster. That night Michael learned to play his first cover lick from the Ventures. A prodigy? Hardly. With the attention span of a typical 9 year old, guitar lessons were a struggle. The lad wanted to play Beatles and Dave Clark Five not Old McDonald or Suite in G. Thus, armed with his Jimi-Hendrix-Red Fender Mustang and reverb-free Princeton amp, Michael began the erratic path of self learning, including a youth band gig for a junior high pool party and a freshman battle of the bands that he still cringes over. But time (lots of it), and guitars (lots of them too), were on his side. So as he moved to Noo Yawk Citteh for a day job, he spent his free time at the open mics (lots of them as well) and things started to click. Well, maybe just rattle a bit initially but click eventually.

Open mics begot gigs in the spasmodic Manhattan bar scene, which begot requests for a CD from patrons who were actually listening. Armed with his debut CD "Welcome To The Acoustic Lounge" Michael is now venturing beyond the Big Apple, seeking out the coffee houses, arts centers and local festivals that showcase solo acoustic performers.

Michael's music has evolved from the soundtrack to this long interesting path. Songs are short and uncomplicated in the tradition of 60s pop music, there are hints of jazz standards in a few tunes, as well as nods to Texas Swing. His influences are all over the map. Some hear James Taylor, Mose Allison, Arto Lindsay, Kenny Rankin, Arlo Guthrie, Boz Scaggs, Dan HIcks or Tom Lehrer - depending on the cut.

Hard to classify, easy to listen to; Michael McCrary
