Artist: My Diet Pill
Album: Second Album
Label: Diet Music
Genre: The American indie within

Considering that most Americans only find out about France's My Diet Pill by accident, it really begs the question: What other great music is out there?

Don't think about it, it'll only hurt too much - especially after embracing this band's ingenious formula of everything America's best college rock has to offer.

Best of all (or worst of all, if you're still hurtin'), the group manages to pull it off in a way that doesn't seem A) forced, B) unnecessary or C) redundant. (And this is why I'm placing all my money on My Diet Pill quickly becoming every reviewer's wet dream. But I digress....)

After a quick intro, My Diet Pill quickly sets the bar high with "General's Crown" and "Ego & I (Roma Surf)." These moderate affairs sound like Berkeley's indie pop threesome Dealership fronted by Imperial Teen's Roddy Bottum. And - to boot - the lyrics are hopelessly romantic: "And if I travel space / At the speed of light / It's to find you."

Not so romantic, however, is the next track, "Sandy's Bathroom." Easily mistaken for a Pixies bootleg (or a B-side from Pearl Jam's No Code, for that matter), this rocker has singer Vlad E. Andrijasevic going all Frank Black on our asses and screaming, simply, "Some say I won't dare go in there / F*ck them!"

Quite a departure from its predecessors, for sure, but it just goes to show this band's range. It's almost as if your favorite music geek (give 'em a kiss while you're at it) wrote down his or her dream album ... only to have My Diet Pill sneak over and steal it for the band's eventual takeover of the modern music world.

The aptly titled Second Album is consistently poetic and beautiful.

More important, perhaps, is the fact that it also has a few injections of rough chords and cuss words to keep you on your toes.

(This limited edition release comes with bonus downloads of the band's French EP and a remix of "Matt Song.")

my diet pill was born through the ashes of Britpop, still smoldering and smoking "liquid", the very first group to feed off blur and elastica and whose hit-like "away" continues to haunt memories. It is during this time that my diet pill pretends to be an english band, a feat achieved with its radio-friendly tunes, layers of distorted guitars, and papapa choruses. they tour europe, hang out with some big names (dionysos, chumbawumba, baby chaos), play at blur's aftershow in nice and have meaningful conversations with damon albarn and graham coxon. ("my diet pill, it's fucking cool!" the former exclaims.) it is the era of their first compilations and first demo. The giraf' ep (now a collector's item) is strangely reminiscent of the happy mondays' most beautiful sleeves.

*1997: giraf' ep (6 tracks demo tape)
*1997: 3 tracks on the intersonic compilation

1998
a new lineup, a rhythmical change (and a change in rhythm), and my diet pill decides to become a french band. a first mini-cd is released containing the single "l'air de rien", quickly becoming the anthem for all those who come across it, despite being upstaged by noir désir's "un jour en france." my diet pill plays alongside venus and hangs out with miossec.
the very first press kit is available and filling up. "magic" compares the band to the french rugby team playing the world cup final!

*1999: first album

2001
change is in the air, a gradual, almost natural process. the band increasingly considers packing off to america and finding its roots: young, dylan, cohen. the sound becomes more moderate, the slide showing up while the pedal steel takes its sweet time, something which my diet pill asks of its audience as the band grows and experiments. it is now about taking the time to really listen to the tracks, going the opposite way, having a good time. growth is also about the band getting bigger as a mysterious - and female - member joins my diet pill.

*2002: 4 tracks demo

2004
whew, what a relief! my diet pill finally realize what they are: an italian group. the cappuccinos and scarmozas washed away any remaining doubts and anxieties. isolated, (almost) phoneless, the musicians don't even have time to go sightseeing. it is like a movie - the marx brothers visit italy. rome, audrey hepburn and "the typewriter". the new album is finalized in january; mixed in march; and mastered in may as the roman vespas buzz away in the background. my diet pill has discovered its idol, and his name is il mago.
the dvd of the recording session is coming soon to a player near you...

*2004: second album
*2004: frech ep (3 tracks)
