What the press are saying about David Myles' "Together and Alone":
"...it's a rare cd that can stop my world long enough to unfold from start to finish, let alone one that could entice me to want to hit the repeat button and listen all over again. David Myles' Together and Alone is one of those records."
-David Ward, CKUA
"If I called it music for a rainy day, that would be selling it short, although these wistful tunes mimic the feel and sound of rain on the eaves. If I said it was the soundtrack for a bold adventure, you'd get the wrong idea, although the lyrical sentiments journal the reflective moments of a rugged journeyer on the highway of life. If I said the style was familiar but uncharted, I would be shortchanging you with an oxymoron, perhaps cheating you into accepting my words instead of the remarkable music of David Myles. Rating: 5/5"
Mary-Lynn Wardle (FFWD, Calgary)
Biography:
David Myles' sound is a testament to the philosophy of less is more. "Together and Alone" combines pure and uncluttered melodies with thoughtful lyrics and sparse acoustic instrumentation. David Myles' songs were shaped by a life in transition. In the past three years, he has studied in Sackville, New Brunswick and Hangzhou, China, worked in the backwoods of Yoho National Park, and learned about the world of politics in the halls of Ontario¹s legislature in Toronto. He calls Fredericton, New Brunswick home. Consequently, the album does not speak to a particular place but rather, a lack of place. "Together and Alone" explores the nature of the solitary life and the need for love.
"Together and Alone" is produced by East Coast Music Award winner Mike Doherty. The recording is stripped-down and natural-sounding, highlighting David Myles' guitar and vocals. The album also features accompaniment by Mike Doherty on Hammond organ and piano, ECMA winner and Maple Blues Society Bass Player of the Year nominee Tom Easley (Hot Toddy) on bass, and vocalist Tania Breen.
David Myles' formative years were spent playing the trumpet and discovering jazz. As a trumpet player, he recorded with acts as diverse as electronic artist Professor Undressor and indie rock group Steaming Toolie. In time, he became increasingly intrigued by the simplicity and beauty of traditional folk and roots music. Out of this fascination grew the penchant for songwriting that created "Together and Alone."
