Jazz funk and poetry.
Describing Modernday Soothsayers in this way is like describing water as being two parts hydrogen one part Oxygen.
Reaching deep into the pool of their combined experience from a strong foundation at the famous Berkley Music School, time spent in the African bush studying the intricate conversations of the drums, and more than a decade of performing poetry on the streets of New York, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Seoul, and Tokyo, Modernday Soothsayers represents more than mere atoms rubbing together to make sound. The influence of Miles Davis, Gil Scott Heron, The Last Poets and Bill Laswell has led this group upon a new path of spiritual expression.
Modernday Soothsayers was founded in 2001 by Marcellus, the groupâs poet and lead vocalist. The idea was to fuse jazz funk expressionism to a heavy poetic vibe in order to create a viable way to bring the full force of explosive poetry performance on an even level with the musician and music. In place of sung melodies lines of verse flowed. The other objective was to use the band as a setting for exploring improvised poetry.
Since the band was formed in 2001, they have collaborated with Roy Davis Jr., under the name Soldiers Of Universal Love, to record the title track of his Album Water for Thirsty Children. UK magazine, Blues and Soul said the following ââ¦For those that prefer their grooves with a hint of jazz âWater For Thirsty Childrenâ offers a more eclectic set taking inspiration from the likes of Stevie Wonderâ¦.A beautifully crafted timeless piece of fusion funk with Marcellusâ thought provoking rap juxtaposed to haunting saxophoneâ
