Miki Newmark's singing career has included performances in nightclubs, resorts and musical theater. Born in NYC, Miki attended the High School of Music & Art and continued her musical education at both Mannes and New York College of Music. She has performed in motions picture soundtracks and television specials. Miki was introduced to acclaimed jazz pianist Rio Clemente by singer and friend Marlene Verplanck. Miki has worked with Rio since and they have completed their first CD entitled "Deed I Do".
Rio Clemente has performed with many jazz legends and has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Newport Jazz Festival and the JVC Jazz Festival. He was a child prodigy who received a BMI Scholarship for musical theater and then continued his education at the famed Julliard School of Music. He has performed with Milt Hinton, Coleman Hawkins, Clark Terry, Joe Venuti, Joe Morello, Ray Alexander, Urbie Green and Milt Jackson. He has also performed with symphony orchestras and at the United Nations.
Rio has recorded several critically lauded jazz albums. "Rio Plays Fascinating Rhythms," is devoted to interpretations of the George Gershwin songbook. An earlier album, "Rio Celebrates Rodgers with bassist Milt Hinton, prompted Linda Rodgers, daughter of the famed composer Richard Rodgers, to remark "Rio Clemente plays my father's music better than anyone I ever heard with unremitting style and sensitivity. And always with a technique that is elegant.
When Miki and Rio went into the studio to record "Deed I Do", the magic began. When Marlene Verplanck heard the completed CD, she smiled and said, "What a happy and good album". Rio's collaboration with Miki is sheer elegance.
Shortly after recording the CD, jazz guitarist and studio owner Len Argese asked Miki if she knew the tune "My Romance". Len took out his guitar and started to play and pressed the record button. That's all it took...one magical take!. "My Romance" can be heard on the CD along with 13 other great standards including I'm in the Mood for Love, Someone to Light Up My Life, It Might As Well Be Spring, If I Could Be With You, What a Little Moonlight Can Do, and a medley of Gershwin tunes.
