The entire community is now a toxic waste dump. Report: U.S. Cover Up on Toxic Waters and NOLA. by Last Night in Little Rock The U.K. Independent Online has an article today Cover-up: toxic waters 'will make New Orleans unsafe for a decade' contending that U.S. government officials know it, and they just aren't saying it.

"The entire community is now a toxic waste dump"
The Gulf Coast is drowning in a poisonous stew, people are dying from waterborne bacteria, and federal funds have been drained by years of pro-industry policies. Katrina is one of the worst environmental catastrophes in U.S. history. By Rebecca Clarren

http://www.redorbit.com/news/politics/242752/katrinas_environment_threat_not_over_greens_say/The floodwaters that covered 80 percent of New Orleans, including many of the poorest neighborhoods, may leave contamination from bacteria and pollutants as they withdraw and residents return, some environmentalists fear.

"My fear is that the people who suffered the most when Hurricane Katrina struck will be the people who become most exposed to toxins," said Eric Olson, a senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Federal and state officials say two weeks of sampling floodwaters has not raised any alarm bells, even though it is swimming with e. coli bacteria that may indicate the presence of other bacteria that could be harmful. Source: REUTERS

West Nile virus ( http://www.newscientist.com/channel/health/dn7922 )have all been anticipated, Hurricane Katrina sparks fears of disease outbreaks

Robert Roos News Editor

But despite some official statements to the contrary, there is little risk that exotic diseases like cholera will erupt, experts say. And while corpses on the streets of New Orleans are a wrenching sight, they actually pose little danger of spreading disease.

Dr. Glenn Morris, an epidemiolgist at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, said the biggest worry is sewage-contaminated water. Quoted in a Reuters report, he said, "Just simply splashing around in the water, if there is sewage contamination there is a risk you could get it onto your hands and get it into your mouth."

The most likely contaminants are the usual culprits in water- and food-borne disease outbreaks in this country, such as Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Shigella, Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium, and hepatitis A virus, said Michael T. Osterholm, PhD, MPH. He is director of the University of Minnesota Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, publisher of this Web site.

Effects of trauma

Another big risk faced by Katrinaâs survivors is to their mental health. About 30 of those exposed to severe trauma â defined as being at risk of losing their lives, seeing a person close to them lose their life or seeing dead bodies â are expected to develop an anxiety disorder such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

Among emergency workers involved, including the police, this figure drops to about 5. âEven those who lose their houses are at a much greater risk of depression and despondency â not psychiatric illnesses, but it can certainly make life much harder for sufferers,â says James Thompson, a trauma psychologist at University College London, UK.

âThe poorer and older victims who have lost their homes are the most vulnerable, because even if they have lost far less, they know that the probability of their being able to replace their loss is far lower.â

But, Thompson says, it is important not to underestimate the resilience of people. Most will have a period of upset and then recover. âMany people actually deal with disaster better than with normal life â studies show that even psychiatric patients behave with absolute lucidity during life-threatening evacuations, only relapsing after danger has passed,â he told New Scientist.

âWhat is crucial now,â he says, âis that the organising structure â government, local councils â act fast to ensure that these people are not left miles away in tents with nothing but food and water rations. That will lead to despondency, anger and frustration.â

The Government now wants to sue the Hurricane Katrina's survivors , For the Governments Own Mistake's? Think about it, If your elevator do go to the top floor, Is there something wrong there? Does it make any real sence to you at all? If your elevator do not go to the top floor, Then Just suppose, What goes around, Comes around?
