Details:
Miss Tess is a talented, dynamic singer-songcreator-jazz guitarist. She began her performing career only five years ago in "Charm City" (a.k.a. Baltimore) before moving to Boston in Fall, 2005 to study at Berklee College of Music. Her unique repertoire of original tunes and some carefully chosen covers can appropriately be described as "modern vintage". Miss Tess crafts universal melodies and lyrics infused with reveries of 20s and 30s swing, jazz, and blues. Her voice has a soulful, satin-like tambour that can be likened to some of the great ladies of jazz. Anita O'Day and June Christie come to mind, as well as contemporary songwriters like Jolie Holland or Erin McKeown.
After only a few months in Boston, Miss Tess is already performing with her own handpicked outfit, "Miss Tess & the Bon Ton Parade". The instrumentation includes upright bass, trumpet, drums, electric guitar, and herself on acoustic guitar and vocals. In addition, Miss Tess performs as a solo artist, and sings with jazz trios in the area.
Miss Tess recently released her first album, "Home", a compilation of original songs recorded with her parents' accompaniment. This album is a tribute to her parents for the supportive musical childhood they provided for Tess. Many of her influences extend from her early exposure to some of the great music of the early to mid 20th century. She is also inspired by more contemporary artists such as Tom Waits, whose influence fuels some of her saucier tunes, such as "I Bear the Child of the Devil" and "Scarlet Letters". Some songs are sweet, some are sassy, some are swingin', and most make people want to dance.
"I grew up playing music, starting out with classical piano at a very young age. Then gradually I picked up the guitar and started writing a few years ago. I'm 24 now and decided to feature my parents on this first release in recognition of their influence on my music. They had me listening to swing, jazz, and classical music at a very early age. It's nice to have those roots. Thanks everyone for their support!" Miss Tess
