Mike Porter was raised on a farm by his parents, Robert E. and Sandra Porter. Mike began performing at the age of 15, and began songwriting at 17. Upon high school graduation, Mike was performing in clubs and earned a music scholarship to attend college. While studying at Eastern Illinois University, Mike performed with his band "Shameless" and was awarded the right to open for National recording artists: Joe Diffie, Clay Walker and Confederate Railroad. During the three summer breaks at college, Mike was hired as a performer for Holiday World in Santa Clause, IN, Six Flags in Eureka, Mo and Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA. He graduated with a Bachelors degree in Communications and Public Relations from Eastern IL University in Charleston, and completed his Public Relations internship with Warner Brother Records in Nashville, TN. He went on to represent Dick Clark's American bandstand in the National Singing Championship two consecutive years in a row. Both years, winning for the State of Missouri, and also placing in the top ten nationwide at the national level. It was at this time that he made the move to Nashville, TN to pursue his music career further. In addition to writing and performing in clubs, Mike has also participated in various Talent competitions. In early January 2004, Mike won the local/semi finals of the Sybersound Records/Partytyme Karaoke contest for Doodles Bar and Grill.(Nashville,TN) The National finals were held in Las Vegas, NV, and aired on National TV. (E!TV) Mike was awarded Best overall male and given a perfect score by all three celebrity judges. Mike has performed at the Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Missouri state fairs as a Country Showdown winner. His new album, entitled "Have You Seen Me?",conatains the song "I Don't Wanna Know", which earned him The Illinois Country Music Association's Songwriter of the Year Award 2004. Mike won the Loretta Lynn's Talent Search 2004 and earned the opportunity to perform as opening act for the country music legend herself. Most recently he was the opening act for Phil Vassar in Taylorville IL. The North American Country Music Association International's awards ceremony were held in March of 2005. Mike was included in four categories and received awards in each of them. The presentation was held at the Country Tonite Theater in Pigeon Forge, TN. Mike was awarded, 2005 NACMAI RISING STAR SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR, 2005 RISING STAR ALBUM OF THE YEAR, 2005 HORIZON MALE VOCALIST and MOST PROMISING MALE ENTERTAINER 2005.
