Hard edged alternative rock with raw punk, garage, and metal roots. The Missing Planes' sound hearkens back to the fertile heyday of '90s college radio with aspirations to achieve the precise power and tunefulness of the Dischord roster, and the math rock

ROCK: 90's Rock, ROCK: Grunge
Details:
The Missing Planes came into existence in 2002 in the cramped back room of an apartment on Buffaloâs west side. Conceived as nothing more than a way for two friends to get together, have fun, and work on some songs guitarist and vocalist Michele Buono was writing, the material took on a life of its own almost immediately.
What began as a low-key acoustic project in theory turned into a full-blown electric assault when Buono and drummer Matt Barber moved to a practice space in one of Buffaloâs abundant abandoned warehouses later that year. Both were metal kids woken up by punk and indie bands of the late â80s and early â90s, so the natural escalation in volume wasnât shocking to anyone who knew them. What was surprising to some--including the band members themselvesâwas their dedication to improving, aspiring to reach the heights of bands that had impacted them so profoundly, like Fugazi, Jawbox, The Spinanes, and Versus.
Since then The Missing Planes have opened shows in their hometown for Calvin Johnson, Jucifer, Jason Loewenstein of Sebadoh, +/-, Wolf Colonel, 50 Foot Wave (featuring Kristin Hersh), The Fontaine Toups, Ill Lit, Victory At Sea, and The Butchies, among others. The Buffalo News called the Planes âa band worth keeping an eye on.â
In August of 2004 The Missing Planes traveled to Brooklyn to record six new songs at Fireproof Recording with Adam Lasus behind the board and James Baluyut (of +/- and Versus fame) producing. The result, In Honor Of Your Departure, was released on Blackbook Records in April of 2005.
The Planes became a power trio in early 2005 with the addition of old friend Tommy Stanford (girlpope, dai atlas) on bass guitar. The reaction at shows has been overwhelmingly positive.
In Honor Of Your Departure was recorded by Adam Lasus and produced by James Baluyut of +/- and Versus. Here are some things that have been written about the disc:
"The duo of Matt Barber and Michele Buono know how to combine their influences and put together a tight rock song." (Aaron Besecker, Niagara Gazette, 4/28/05)
"[In Honor Of Your Departure] pays heed to the band's admitted influences - Fugazi, Jawbox, The Spinanes, and of course, Versus - while continuing the band's now consistent trend of finding the beautiful complexities within the primal and cacophanous." (Jeff Miers, The Buffalo News, 4/29/05)
"The duo's clear debt is to the heyday of the 1990s when underground bands were taking over and CMJ was the bible: pure indie rock and alt-pop...In Honor Of Your Departure bears the mark of indie rock splendor." (Donny Kutzbach, Artvoice, 4/28/05)
