Million Year Dance
Biography
The name Million Year Dance translates as: In the greatest state of Liberation one is able to witness all the wave energies in the universe connected- this wave energy is the Million Year Dance. The group is based out of Houston, Texas and has been together since 0ctober 2003. The music has been described as a mix between The Doors, the soul singing of Nina Simone, and of something new- a southern hypnotic pulse. âJonathan Welchâs voice is otherworldy. Itâs a gorgeous, trembling sound with fluttering falsetto. Comparisons to the late Jeff Buckley are unavoidable,â says Sara Cress of the Houston Chronicle. Sara goes on to say, âMillion Year Dance is more than Welch, though. The balance of Steven Wetherellâs multi-instrumental, âorganicâ musical interests and Doyle Odomâs more experimental, plugged-in pursuits creates a layered groundwork for the music.â Joel Lewisâ drumming and Nic Houstonâs bass-playing keep the music tightly moving.
Along with this new and exciting music, Million Year Dance offer something unique to the live aspect of performing. âMillion Year Dance is something to be experienced, not just heard,â says Omar Afar of Free Press Houston. Every time Million Year Dance performs it is their mission to take themselves and the audience on a journey into a psychedelic, spiritual bliss. Sara Cress is quoted in the Thursday, January 26, 2006 Houston Chronicle Preview as saying, âThere is a cloud of mystery surrounding Million Year Dance during its performances, thanks to Welchâs interest in Buddhism and Yoga.â
The group released its first record, Liberation, on January 27th of 2006. âEach of the six songs is beautiful, unabashedly passionate and leaves the listener wanting more,â says Sara Cress. Million Year Dance are now ambitiously perusing their fate.
