Charly McLion - The man behind the CD âÂÂNature of the Universe"
He's been around for quite a while - back in 1970 he was the musical leader of a rock band called âÂÂTruss". They played as only local group on the 3-day pop festival in Aachen, Germany. Pink Floyd were the headliners on the last day. Deep Purple, Caravan, Can, Amon Düül, and, and, and...played during these sunny summer days.
Charly McLion - his family name is Büchel (with this german âÂÂu"-umlaut) - was also member of the first band who had a single in Aachen back in the sixties. The name of this band was âÂÂCave Dwellers".
Charly McLion played all kinds of music - Rock, Folk, Blues (touring with Blues-Legend âÂÂChampion Jack Dupree"), R&B, Soul, New Wave.
He composed music for films, jingles and video productions. For a movie showing a birth he played only acoustic guitar for the soundtrack.
In the late eighties he met Robert Schröder who had already produced a few electronic LPs. Schröder (who named himself âÂÂDreamstar") and Charly McLion formed the Electronic-Duo âÂÂDouble Fantasy". The only CD they made was called âÂÂUniversal Ave.". It was a tremendous success. Listeners of the german cult radio programm for electronic music âÂÂSchwingungen" (Vibrations) moderated by Wilfried Trenkler elected them in 1994 as second best CD of all times. Jean Michel Jarre won the poll. Even today a lot of people all over the world remember the CD and the guitar playing of Charly McLion. Double Fantasy had some problems with their record company. Finally they broke up. Charly McLion played his new electronic music during the next few years only for film or video productions.
In 1997 he had a project with the dutch keyboarder and composer Bert Bosch. They made a production called âÂÂSoft Travel" but they could not get the record deal they wanted for it. âÂÂSoft Travel" will finally be issued in the course of 2001 on the label âÂÂKingfisher".
In the fall of 2000 Charly McLion found some time and inspiration to put together his solo-CD â The Nature of the Universe". This production is the fruit of a long musical journey. One can hear the influences that span a musical life during more than thirty years. Rich in melodies, textures and sounds it brings the unique guitar playing of Charly McLion back to the listener. The music is groovy, relaxing and refreshing. Music to feel well while listening to it.
