METAL: Alternative Metal, ROCK: Funk Rock
Details:
Walter âDirty Waltâ Kibby will be the first to tell you: âI love my former group, Fishbone. Iâm a founding member and I was in it to win it until recently. I wish them all the best, their success is my success. But I felt it was time for me personally to move on and try some new things.â
For this multi-talented individual this includes fronting newly-reformed band Sound Barrier (widely recognized as the first successful black metal band), a solo project andâ¦YEAR OF THE DRAGON.
Year of the Dragon happened almost as an accident. Says co-vocalist Roderick âRodcoreâ Palmer, âI also sing with Walt in Sound Barrier. We had recorded a slew of great material for that project, and had taken a break to mix it all. I had some free studio time with a friend who wanted to help us out, so I said to Walt, âHey man, letâs just go in and knock out a few songs. No filler, no frills.ââ Dirty Walt enthusiastically agreed.
The duo got in the studio with drummer John Montgomery and Spacey T, another former Fishbone soldier and founding member of Sound Barrier, who played all the guitar and bass tracks. They didnât have high expectations other than having a little fun and just killing some time, but they were all surprised at how the recordings turned out.
Sonically, there are elements of Dirty Waltâs former group in the mix, but the reggae, funk and hip-hop influences are mined deeper. They even take a chance with an acoustic song. Says Rodcore, âWe felt the need to do something stripped down, something you really didnât see too much of in Fishbone. Since this recording was not meant to be much more than us logging studio time in, we figured itâd be fun to be more musically adventurous.â
The one thing Year of the Dragon share with Fishbone is a frenetic, powerful live show. âIâve been doing this a long time,â says Dirty Walt, âand I know I canât come with anything less than what the people are used to me giving them. The shows still gotta rock hard and with hardcore intensity.â
Year of the Dragon is the whole packageâ¦great songs and lively, energetic live shows from veterans in the game. Dirty Walt states it best: âThis is our year, man. We canât lose. We wonât lose. Ya dig?â
