Details:
The Young Lions:
It all became so simple after listening to Ibrahim's Dream: a live recording at Café Nema by three of the most prolific jazz musicians inhabiting the east coast. The trio: The Young Lions, are consistent with the very essence of instrumental proseâ¦a delicate rendition of anticipation and melodic democracy, undermined by a relentless force of punctuations and riffs. Yes, the resurrection of live jazz as conveyed by this vanguard - yet classically endowed - group titled, The Young Lions is among us.
Starting Line Up.
On the keys demonstrating a prodigious ability to fuse both the piano and moog we have Allyn Johnson. Mr. Johnson, a Washington DC native, began his tenure at the age of seven, and over the years has developed a unique sound that gives brilliance and fortitude to the art of jazz improvisation. Members of the audience will find themselves staring at the hand anatomy of Mr. Johnson in search of an augmented fingerâ¦this of course in jest until proven otherwise.
Supporting the Acoustic Bass we have Kris Funn, the stealth provider of melodies by which the members rely upon. Mr. Funn, a product of Howard University's School of Engineering has practiced his instrument of choice since the age of 14. He also is responsible for that infectious head-nod accompanied by the signifying 'yeah man' praise of approval, as voiced by group and audience members alike. I speak for both audience members and all current and future collaborators by saying "keep it coming".
Demonstrating a dexterity that represents the original 'boom bap' we have no other than Quincy 'Q' Phillips on the skins. At the humble age of four Quincy discovered his calling: to present jazz with the most outstanding assortment of riffs, high hats, and rim shots all while sustaining a controlled tempo for his fellow band mates and patrons to enjoy. Whether effortlessly applying his wizardry as a collective tempo director, or going out on his own for a brief - yet bombastic - solo stunt, the audience will soon fall in absolute favor of not only his sound, but his perceived delight in achieving perfection.
The Young Lions are poised at traveling the world and providing audiences of different creeds and origins with a selection of improvisational jazz. They are quickly becoming the toast of the U Street Jazz Renaissance area, and plan to ride the wave with a tradition of music that is obviously like no other.
