Details:
Almost a year in the making, "Life, Love and Funk Vol.I" is the culmination of a massive undertaking by Bassist Marcus Toliver. After spending a half of a decade living, studying and playing in the LA area, he decided that the time was right for a project that he could call his own. And what listeners now have available to them is an honest and solid effort, heavily influenced by both the artists that influenced him through the creative process and his life experience in the LA music scene. The album was written, arranged, produced, performed, recorded, and co-mixed by Marcus. Relying solely on his musicianship, and only armed with formal musical training as a Bass player, he was able to channel and present all of his desired musical expression through learning his way around the various instruments used while in production, a feat that he found to be the most challenging and fulfilling aspect of the entire project. But, in actuality, this project was not just conceived in a little 'ol year. It was actually a long time in the making and a long time coming...

Having shown an early interest in music sparked from attending his grandmotherâs church, he was surprised at a young age with a brand new TAMA drum kit, a gift from his grandmother. His parents were always music enthusiasts but initially considered the musical interest as a phase that would eventually pass. After a short while, the kit was reduced to something that just took up space in storage and the interest died⦠Or did it? The interest in drums may have died, but the passion for music lied dormant until it decided to come forth again to remind him that it was still there, inside him. It was the beginning of middle school, the 6th grade, when the idea of playing an instrument would surface again.
As fate would have it, Marcusâs father met the middle school orchestra teacher while registering him for classes, and they hit it off. They next thing Marcus knew, he was enrolled in the school orchestra⦠He wanted to take computersâ¦
Due to his overall physical stature, he was assigned to the upright bass. If you ask Marcus, that was the beginning of the end. His teacher kept him inspired and motivated by turning him onto such artists as Stanley Clarke, Ron Carter, Jaco Pastorius and Marcus Miller. One day, his teacher brought in his own electric bass for Marcus to try out and that was all it took. But unfortunately, after three bass-filled years, the machine stopped again and was not to start up again until early adulthood---age 20, to be exact.
Post-college, working a â9-to-5â and not feeling satisfied, Marcus took it upon himself to pick up the bass again and take private lessons. He contacted his former teacher to see if he offered private lessons and was referred to the-then Las Vegas bass heavyweight-Darryl Williams. After a little over a year of private lessons, the decision was made to take it to the next step and enroll in music school. In March 2005, Marcus began the year-long intensive course for electric bass at the new Los Angeles Music Academy, located in Pasadena, California.
After graduation, various odd-jobs and coming face-to-face with the unromantic reality of the LA music scene over the span of the next couple of years, he still continued to persevere through the many false starts and discouraging chapters endured to move forward with his musical passion. As of 2011, he currently serves as an active member of the United States Air Force, while recording and playing live whenever time and opportunities arise.
