Stephen began playing the piano at the age of 4. His grandmother, who was a long time piano teacher, taught him for the first several years of his life out of her home music studio. By the time he reached high school age his fellow students new of his talent with the piano and encouraged him to join the schoolâs jazz band. In fact, as he tells it, âThe band director walked up to me during the last day of summer band camp and told me that the other students were talking about how well I played the piano, and he said to me, âJazz band starts on Tuesday after school. Be there.ââ
During his years at Riverview High School he studied jazz under the directorship of jazz musician and composer John Laporta. He also played in several other small ensembles ranging from jazz and blues to rock. One such group, Latter Rain, featured his original music in a 4 piece rock setting, and took him and his group to win a local battle of the bands.
Stephen eventually attended college at the State University of New York at Fredonia where he studied music business and continued playing in various ensembles including a Latin Jazz Big Band. He also began playing on church worship bands around this time. It was his experience in worship music that led him to teaching youth worship bands, mentoring young musicians and showing them how to work together as a band. And after years of teaching bands he went on to be a private piano teacher which he continues to enjoy doing.
Now Stephen John Paul has collaborated with bass player Josh Way and drummer Cory Ross (one of the young musicians Stephen had mentored). Stephen now uses his unique piano rock sound to deliver music driven by strong lyrical writing and a heart for God.
