For the millionth fuckin' time, Seattle- your boy Avenue Avatar is a beast, a mic murderer whose material and presentation totally sons all but the best NW hiphop, street or otherwise, has to offer; he's also a skinny fuckin' Russian kid doing absolutely unapologetic gangster rap, repping the "Chopper District" and some of it's most notorious denizens. (Without saying too much, rest assured he's not wearing a Black Flag shirt here because he likes Dez, Hammerin' Hank or Chavo OR Keith Morris. And what's more punk rock than re-purposing a Hot Topic shirt in such a fashion?)
A lot of cats rount here are slow to warm to his music (even those who remember what a savvo he was as a preteen battle rapper, under the wing of Oldominion and the Stuck Under The Needle familia), which he's been making quite well for going on like, what, over 5 years now? Be sure, Seattle has a glut of awful white gangsta rappers doing derivative Wigerian bullshit, but this kid stands out on every track he touches. Now, just doing cuts with Lil Wayne, Alchemist, and AraabMuzik ain't enough if you're wack- but the kid, in my opinion, is that straight drop. More importantly, he's sharp, a savvy selfstarter and I feel like big things are bound to happen with him and his music. Especially as he further connects with (or exploits, if you prefer) his Russian heritage with each new release or video- and the booming Russian rap scene. - Larry Mizzel Jr. (The Stranger)
