Sixth street is in the Tenderloin of San Francisco and is our worst street. I worked there for years. So this album is loosely based on my work life. My album 19th and Mission, then represents my home life. That's why that album is fun and celebratory and this one is about human darkness, whispers, come-ons, tie-offs, twisted insults, spittle warrior, flea bitten, bag of dust ass crack shitters and condom laden HIV scratched Staff Hepatitis C phantom shadow person war traffic psychotic hammer screwdriver man pissing meth syringe eyes & black tar heroin tears.
It's the hangover after the party at 19th and Mission.
This is the subject matter of the album framed in what is unhinged psychedelic electric pop with analog turntablist overtones, cut and pasty experimental structures, and wall of sound collage movie soundtrack shapeshifting density. I mixed many different sounds during the recording process. Always toying with genre and unlikely pairings of instrumentation and vocal arrangement. Lots of found sounds and beat loops mixed with organic analog tape recordings of guitars, bass keyboards, pianos, horns, multiple vocal harmonies and lo-fi sampling. I use shitty mics. I document psychosis. I blend it all.
The tone of the album goes like this: braggadocios, hopeful, desperate, sad, bleak, slightly buoyant, dark, happy unstable, and ending in hopelessness.
These guys have many layers and tracks of small bits of sound. I cram in different genres into each song to fill them, up.
There is a theme on this album of different forces at work.
Each of these characters, capable of turning in on each other, results in an epic inner battle of morals and ethics.
It's easy to wage a mental war with yourself on sixth street.
For as much shit I talk about it, I do think it is a very interesting place to self examine. In the midst of all the chaos, you really have to look inside yourself during certain situations and find out who you are and what you think about it all. I know I dug deep over the years. Thanks sixth, you countercultural hedonistic dysfunctional beast you.
