Highway 1 is another ambient voyage created for us by Diatonis using highly processed synthesisers and guitars to take us behind the veil of reality into a world of perception, imagination, and emotion. The sonics have some general similarities to parts of Ambient Life and Trajectories; in that respect we're in familiar territory but walking a different path.

The shortest (at under six minutes) track 'Highway 1' begins our journey. Almost mournful refrains alternately played by reverbing guitar and piano (or a piano effect) create a sense of lonely contentment while unobtrusive organ like drones gently shift in the background. With careful listening it's possible to discern layers of drones and occasional guitar licks in the distance. Plucked guitars feature much less prominently after this first track. On 'Currents' they are mainly shadowy sounds along with other ghostly twinkling set against a backdrop of muffled pads. Of particular interest in my opinion is 'Night Drive'. Here the mood is both serious and magical as stretched out tones slowly weave around each other and airy vocal sounds come and go as if out of nowhere. Other tones pan across the soundscape like distant car lights seen for a few moments, and later on gaseous washes make an appearance along with resonating goings on. There can be something strangely satisfying and mystical about driving at night in the right conditions, this track manages to convey that feeling. Sometimes all one can do is just admire the way the sounds have been put together to form tracks that at first hearing are like tangled sonics but actually add up to a coherent whole.

I'm thinking of 'Currents' where glistening ribbons of plucked guitar glide and slowly dance around with each other and with other processed tones. This is very much an album in the drifting/floating vein with Stuart's musical signature all over it. I've never been disappointed by a Diatonis album and happily Highway 1 is no exception to that rule. This is music that needs one's full attention in a quiet environment, especially to appreciate all the nuances and subtle shifts in the tones. Immerse yourself in its humble glory.
