Shirley Jackson has been playing music professionally for twenty-five years and for the past seven years been the leader of blues septet Shirley Jackson & her Good Rockinâ Daddys. Originally from Western Canada, she spent her early years playing in folk, country, R&B, rock & roll, and blues bands playing guitar, drums, saxophone and vocals. She completed a Music Business/Merchandising and Performance Degree from Red Deer College in 1984 studying percussion and classical guitar before moving to the East Coast in 1987 where she has earned a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax. While at Dalhousie University she studied saxophone with Don Palmer and percussion with Jim Farady. Shirley Jackson was also a member of the Atlantic Percussion Ensemble (led by Farady) for three years.
Shirley Jackson has been a featured performer in the music scene throughout Canada and the United States since 1997. Shirley has been an annual featured guest performing with Canadian Jazz and Blues Hall of Fame inductee, Dutch Mason, international recording artist Theresa Malenfant; and Juno Award winner (2005) Garrett Mason at the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival (St John, NB) for the past six years.
In the summer of 2001, Shirley was a featured guest performer in San Francisco, California with such notable musicians as; Snooky Flowers (Janis Joplin Band), Burtin Winn (Angela Strehli Band) R.J. Mischo; Steve Freund, and Johnny Nitro and the Door Slammers. In 2002 Shirley toured Ontario and Quebec with four-time Maple Blues Nominee/ 2 time ECMA nominee Glamour Puss Blues Band.
In the summer of 2004, Shirley Jackson & her Good Rockinâ Daddys performed the Halifax Jazz Festival opening for the international recording artist Jumpinâ Johnny Sansone from Louisiana. Shirley Jackson also performed at the Halifax Blues Festival with Her Good Rockinâ Daddys opening for Kenny âBlues Bossâ Wayne with the release of their video âCareful What You Ask Forâ Produced by William F. White International. Shirley Jackson & her Good Rockinâ Daddys continued their summer headlining the Maximum Blues Festival with international recording artists, Big Jack Johnson, The Nicole Nelson Band and Eddie âThe Chiefâ Clearwater. Ending the summer with a performance at a John Kerry election campaign party in Beverly Hills, California.
