The Subscribers (www.thesubscribers.net) play music for A Leg To Stand On, a charitable organization that transforms the lives of disabled children in developing countries through the provision of corrective surgery and prosthetic limbs.
"The Subscribers" is comprised of members from the hedge fund community (Tim Fletcher, Chris Heasman, R.S. Ophir, Mead Welles and Timothy Wheeler) and is supplemented by an array of talented musicians also drawn from the hedge fund community.
The band was born when Mead (drums and the founder of ALTSO) and Chris (guitar, slide and occasional vocals) began jamming together, covering blues and classic rock standards. During a trip to London, Chris caught up with Tim Fletcher (lead guitar) at a gig in which Tim was performing with his band. Chris suggested that it would be fun to play together when Tim was next in New York. A few weeks later, at a business meeting in New York with some hedge fund managers and counsel, Chris casually mentioned his desire to assemble a performing musical group to Timothy Wheeler (lead vocals and bass guitar) and the final piece of the puzzle fell into place. A few short months later Mead and Chris organized the band's first gig to benefit ALTSO at Serena's Nightclub in New York City in March of 2004. The Serena's gig was so successful that Chris and Mead launched Rocktoberfest, an industry-wide event that attracted over 700 attendees and more than fifty musicians from the hedge fund community at Planet Hollywood in New York, in October of 2004. Rocktoberfest was so successful, that it has firmly established itself as an annual favorite on the hedge fund industry calendar. Since then, the band has performed regularly at corporate and industry-sponsored events to benefit ALTSO.
Clarksdale 9
Following a meeting in London in February 2005, in which Tim Fletcher mentioned the band to industry standout and blues fan Shonda Warner, The Subscribers were invited to Clarksdale, Mississippi, sight of the infamous "Crossroads," to record some tracks with blues veteran Jimbo Mathus. With only six weeks' notice, the band members wrote, arranged and cobbled together thirteen original songs in contemplation of the Clarksdale recording sessions, with each musician contributing music and/or lyrics, new or old to the project. The band flew to Memphis, Tennessee to perform at the inaugural Card Players' Ball, and then traveled the short distance to historic Clarksdale, Mississippi where they recorded all thirteen songs in only fifteen hours -- a remarkable accomplishment that could not have been achieved without the help of all The Subscribers' new friends in Clarksdale. A huge, huge thank you to Jimbo Mathus (producer) and Will Dawson (engineer), Tommy Polk, Bill Talbot and of course Shonda Warner. The resulting tracks encompass a broad array of musical styles culled from the various tastes and backgrounds of the players who participated, including blues, rock, pop, country and folk. The Subscribers first CD, entitled "Clarksdale 9," will be available in October 2004, and all proceeds from its sale will go directly to ALTSO.
The Subscribers family includes the following current member performers and alumni: Kit Boyatt, Brad Cole, Neil Coles, Al Ferrante, Andrew Hiestand, Piers Lawrence , Pete Muller, Diana Olja, Barbara Quinlan, Nader Salman , Ken Schweighardt, Hunt Taylor, Martha Taylor and Tricia Wygal. These individuals continue to donate their time, talent and enthusiasm to this worthy project. Their commitment and dedication to our cause has allowed The Subscribers to perform even when some members' business obligations prevent them from appearing at scheduled performances.
