of unreleased tracks spanning from
1994-99. Some of these tracks were
originally intended for the first Surface 10
CD release on Hypnotic Records in
1996.
The music of "Borrowed Time 2000" has a more vintage-ambient sound (homage to Tangerine Dream,
Brian Eno, Steve Roach) then the usual
Surface 10 electronic pace, and in the years
after the time when it was first recorded Surface
10 founder Dean De Benedictis had formed an extremely sentimental attachment to it. It did not take Dean long to realize how emotional the music of "Borrowed Time 2000" is, and what it stands as a personal reflection of. Dean states "This music, just as my release 'A Lone Reply' was, is an outcry of a longing for timelessness. I still wanted to try
and share that, whether or not people will be able to extract the same meaning from it."

SURFACE 10: Borrowed Time 2000 (CD on Space for Music Records)

Although generally more "ambient" than Surface 10's previous work, this music still exudes a definite body and vibrancy. The melodies are tense and designed to generate an undercurrent of anticipation. Several tracks break the passive mode, creating intense moments of majestic power.

Waves of galactic tones sweep through the air, buzzing and whirling to achieve a density born of ethereal consistency. Languid e-perc rhythms drift through these sonic clouds, urging melodies from relaxed textures. Gentle riffs emerge, twirling and spinning with a teasing velocity, to recede into the pleasant soundscape like elusive apparitions. Effects fade in and out, tantalizing as they enhance the flow with their brief appearance. Staccato chords waft through the weaving tonalities, while percussives periodically liven the mix with frolicsome beats.

Often, this music strays from its traditional ambient mold, exploring mildly more energetic territory that softy invigorates the audience with playful stretches. Always, though, the intention is to mesmerize and supplant the listener into a zone of increasing vastness.

According to De Benedictis, "This music is an outcry of longing for timelessness," and that disposition is excellently captured by his enduring compositions.

A talented mixture of airy tones and gritty effects conspire to agitate and pacify, maintaining an easygoing temperament that frequently stirs the audience from its hypnotic state. Uplifting riffs pepper the mellow atmosphere, producing enthralling crescendos amid the enticing soundscape.

BIO:
Dean De Benedictis, aka Surface 10, is a Southern California based music producer/performer/conceptual artist who has has played a roll in the electronic music world since the mid 90s. He utilizes his interests in a variety of musical styles and concepts ranging from experimental electronica to ambient abstract, IDM to progressive jazz/rock/fusion and beyond.

In 1996 Dean released his self titled debut CD on Hypnotic Records (a subsidiary of Cleopatra Records) under the alias SURFACE 10, gaining him recognition in the electronic ambient genre. He then appeared on various Cleopatra/Hypnotic compilations and tribute CDs, as well as with other labels. In 97 Dean collaborated with George Sara of THC on another project for Hypnotic called CATHEXIS, releasing the CD "Exempli Gratia", and achieving a place in the techno/trance realm. In the year 2000 Surface 10 released the CD "In Vitro Tide" on DiN Records in England (Ian Boddy's label) which took a stylistic twist towards the edgy sound of the IDM world. Shortly after that in the year 2001, Dean De Benedictis released "a lone reply", the deep-space/ethno-ambient CD released under his own name and on his own label Fateless Music.
