Who are the Surf Messengers?

Are they a soundscape co-operative, a jazz quartet, a beat combo or an experimental outfit? Probably none of the above (though sometimes all).

What we can be sure of is, whatever instrumentation they choose to use, whether it be regular or radical, the resulting music is always interesting, frequently challenging, sometimes darkly humorous and often extremely beautiful.

They have played together in various guises since as far back as the early 80's.
Recordings made of the early sessions were only ever 2 track stereo affairs, circulated amongst band and friends. Since then they have gradually got the high tech stuff that enabled them to make quality, mixable records of these sessions and proper CDs that could be circulated more widely and gain them the reputation they now enjoy.

"excerpts......" was recorded during the last 10 hours of a continuous 24 hour performance that took place in front of an invited audience in a circus tent on a village green in rural England, and embodies all that is wonderful about improvised music.

Possessing an inspired level of musicianship, The Surf Messengers combine regular instrumentation with often unlikely and low-tech sound sources (TVs/ radios/ kitchen appliances/ kids instruments and toys/ vehicle parts/ record players instead of turntables/ first generation electronics) to create wonderous and sometimes disconcerting aural adventures.
