Details:
I actually met Richard Butler (of the furs) at CBGB maybe fifteen, twenty, years ago. Hilly introduced us; I think he thought our similar disillusionment with the recording industry might kindle an interesting conversation. Ii may have been the "Love Spit Love" era, but for whatever reason the band had re-located to NYC. Hilly didnât know what a fan of âTALK TALK TALKâ I was or that I was such a Steve Lillywhite fan. I had lobbied for Lillywhite to produce the CBS recording⦠but that wasnât happening because Hilly wanted to produce it himself. I loved what Lillywhite had done on The Brainsâ first album. So much so that when we redid the CBS recording thirty years later, Dave and I did a little Lillywhite on the first track. I think Hilly did use him on one of his later bandsâ records (Crossfire Choir) but itâs not a signature Lillywhite sound.
Anyway, you couldnât have a conversation at CBs when the bands were playing; it was way too loud. But Butler seemed like a nice enough guy, all rock star hair and trench coat, he looked the part. Iâm not sure heâd ever heard of the Pet Clams, maybe, it was very loud like I said.
I thought âTALK TALK TALKâ was their first recording (itâs their second) but itâs the first one I heard, coming out a few months after our first. And it was a revelation to me, âInto You Like A Trainâ and of course, âPretty In Pinkâ. It was good enough to write a movie around. And the Fursâ later remake (after the movie) of it was not as good as the original, too smooth and not enough Lillywhite.
Iâve since heard that the band didnât like the movie, because Carolyn (of the song) is supposed to be a kind of victim⦠a little desperate; you get it. But thatâs not how I see her. To me sheâs the aggressor, the men wander through her dreams; lost, and wearing the clothes she tosses aside. I view her as much stronger than the Furs describe, and the men as the ones being left behind. Now maybe sheâs based on a real girl and Iâm all wrong. But I didnât know that girl; I only know what I hear in the lyric.
And so, this is one of the very best songs from the post punk era, done by me and my guys (Joe Schulman and Jan Taler).
You know... It was a long time ago now, maybe it was Tim Butler and Hilly thought two bass players might have something to say to each other...
