Pipes & Strings - Suite for Alan brings together some of Scotlandâs finest musicians in a unique collaboration of solo and orchestral performances, fusing together the traditional and classical music genres.

The title track of the CD - "Suite for Alanâ - which was commissioned by the National Piping Centre,received its first public performance as part of Piping Live in 2010.
The suite was written as a tribute to and celebration of the life and music of the eminent piper, composer & teacher Duncan Johnstone. It is scored for solo small pipes, flute, whistles and string orchestra and includes some of Duncan's best know works, including a full performance of the Piobaireachd âLament for Alan, my Sonâperformed by Roddy MacLeod MBE, which have been arranged and orchestrated by Duncanâs son, Neil Johnstone.

As well as other tracks featuring Glenuig brothers Iain & Allan MacDonald (Flute, pipes and whistles), James Ross (Piano) and Neil Johnstone (cello), the CD features a specially commissioned piece, âA Welcome Shoreâ by Stephen Adam, written for the Year of Scotlandâs Islands, which brings together traditional tunes from the Islands in a cleverly arranged work for solo Cello and string orchestra.
