Atmospheric Rock
11 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Modern Rock, ELECTRONIC: Soundscapes
Details:
saurab bhargava is a chicago-based composer who melds together elements from various music styles to create a unique soundscape, which he calls atmospheric rock. the dreamlike states invoked by his music serve to have a strong emotional effect on the listener - "the most important participant in the experience is the mind - how it interprets music and affects the listener is what breathes life and emotion into the music."
born in 1977 in cleveland, saurab began his musical training as a classical pianist at an early age. In his teens, saurab began playing guitar, bass, and keyboards with local bands in genres varying from punk to blues and classic rock. as a student at duke university, saurab played with the three-piece band, qenga, where he developed his songwriting skills as they crafted the album 'a friend of mine'.
upon graduation, saurab moved back to chicago and continued composing, this time working solo to develop his own style. drawing upon his influences, notably sigur rós, massive attack, jane's addiction, the album leaf, and the cure, he began to work on what eventually would become on the steps of a dream.
"i consider this album to be a soundtrack for itself," saurab describes of his debut album. "i believe that audio and visual art forms have a deep relationship with each other. most people tend to approach it from the visual-centrist stance - that music serves as a soundtrack for the visual. i try to approach it from both ways: try not to think of it as an accompaniment to something visual; rather, think of the visuals as an accompaniment to the music."
he is responsible for the writing and performing of all instruments on the album, and, over 4 years in the making, the result is a musical tapestry that takes listeners on a visual and emotional journey across varied sound and landscapes. "it is up to the listener to determine what the journey means for him, be it introspective or extrospective. i try to let my music set the stage."
