Great rock'n'roll doesn't always have a great name. In 1992, Newmarket, New Hampshire natives Jon Nolan and Cliff Murphy named their band Say ZuZu (a reference to the Frank Capra film âÂÂIt's A Wonderful Life"). Six albums and countless touring later, it's too late to change.
"Every Mile" is Say ZuZu's first release since 1999's "Live," and their first studio effort since 1998's "Bull". 3 more albums ("Highway Signs & Driving Songs," "Say ZuZu" and "Take These Turns") had been released independently between 1995 and 1997.
The band's fourth studio effort, released in 1998, is clearly the most musically mature. From the musicianship and production to the song writing and lyrics, Bull rocks, rolls, and twangs with an intensity and purpose that shows these guys are serious about this music stuff. For some Rock, try "I'm Your Man (Stringbean)," with an insanely catchy beat and lyrics that paint a bold picture of honest lust.
If you want some Roll, "Pennsylvania" is the song that will grab you first. Jon Nolan's lyrics tell a small story with insight, precision, and emotional depth - exactly what a storyteller strives for. For Twang, "Wasting Time" is just about the best country song I've heard since Steve Earle broke big with "Guitar Town." This song has it all: spurned love, alcohol, a "looking-glass" metaphor, sweet redemption, and loads of rich harmonies and catchy guitar licks. Hank, Sr., would have been proud.
