Well, it's official: after the release the surprising Anybody EP just two months ago, there has been a lot of speculation as to what would be the next release from the sudden-cult-status Option Library record label. And apparently, it's... Sdasda? How do I pronounce that and why do I care?
From the opening moments - ocean-floor chimes followed by oscillating devil blues over math-reggae bass - it is instantly obvious why one should care. Highly unorthodox, this is music recorded completely in the moment. 100 live improvisation harnessed by a single microphone, it would define lo-fi if not for the overtime that clearly went into the mix. This is a record that demands your full attention, as illustrated by the two large words that make up the whole of the liner notes: "Headphones Help."
But still, who the hell is Sdasda?
John Houx, Option founder and Anybody frontman, is nearly as confused as everyone else. "I was just wrapping up the [Anybody] EP, Option was still 'Round,' nobody knew about it at all, and I get this disc in the mail, throw it in and was blown away. There's an electric guitar and bass, which are both unplugged, and an acoustic guitar, and then mixed to a pretty crazy extent."
Houx played the EP, titled Sdasdaone, for some friends, including Saloon Studios' J Cody Baker, whose immediate love for the tunes convinced Houx to release it. He replied to the email address scrawled on the disc, worked out a plan with the enigmatic group (who he claims he still has yet to meet), and called Baker to design a cover. Within an hour, Cody had emailed the cover photos that have already become classics among Optionites (the label's fanatics) as computer wallpaper.
So who does Sdasda sound like? "It reminds me of the band Ataxia [members of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fugazi, and Bicycle Thief] but with deep almost reggae grooves and pretty western melodies" says Houx, "and then it turns on you again with this sort of tinkling digital sound, like Sigur Ros on acoustic guitar." Houx, who mastered the project, still hasn't figured out how the group found him in the first place. "I'm just glad I got the chance to hear this, cause I haven't been able to stop ever since."
The Sdasda EP Sdasdaone will be available August 9th on CDBaby.com and select independent retailers.
