POP: Folky Pop, FOLK: Folk Pop
Details:
Now in their 17th year of performances and with a background in traditional Scottish song, Smithfield Fair is a song-driven acoustic trio concentrating on original songs using close warm harmonies and driving rhythms. The trio has performed in concert with a 'who's who' of Celtic performers, including Alex Beaton, Alasdair Fraser, Brian McNeill, Robbie O'Connell, Andy M. Stewart, Eileen Ivers, the Tannahill Weavers and John Taylor. With a deep love of Scottish culture, the group has achieved a strong place in contemporary Celtic music and continues an intense schedule of performances across North America in concert halls, folk and acoustic venues and Scottish/Celtic festivals. 2005 witnessed their ninth internationally-distributed album - Swept Away - which again brought the group critical acclaim and worldwide radio airplay. Smithfield Fair is singer-songwriters Dudley-Brian and Jan Smith and drummer/percussionist Frang Bladen, joined on Swept Away by bassist Bob Smith, lead acoustic guitarist David Praet and fiddler John Taylor.
Formerly members of the acoustic pop quartet Charmer, they performed in concert with the Washington Squares, Nanci Griffith, John Prine, John Fahey, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Louisiana's LeRoux, Arlo Guthrie, Jesse Winchester and many other singer/songwriters. Althought starting out in Scottish traditional music, Smithfield Fair's members have always included their original songs and have increasingly found audiences asking for their original material. This has given the group in presentation a wonderful mix of Celtic-tinged acoustic pop - originals and traditional songs done with a uniquely fresh perspective.
Garnering increased international radio airplay over the years, Smithfield Fair continues to receive strong and consistant critical acclaim for their brilliant presentation, their strongly imaginative original songs, and their furtherance of Celtic musical traditions.
