Friend's debut album merges ART ROCK with complex ELECTRONIC beats and catchy POP vocals. It can be fast, it can be pretty, at times it can be terrifying. Where computer perfection and human error meet, you will find Friend.

8 MP3 Songs
ELECTRONIC: Pop Crossover, ELECTRONIC: Experimental

Details:
The debut Friend album, "Of Whom?", is a first for musicians John Adams and Jamie Grefe. It started out just as an experiment. Mr. Grefe and Mr. Adams, having found themselves in a new country, with almost no recording equipment, and only a guitar and bass, wondered if they could make a song on Mr. Adams' computer. Using a couple of bass lines that Mr. Grefe had written, they plugged in to the back of the computer, turned on the metronome, and pressed record. When they were done for the morning, they went to their jobs. That night, Mr. Adams put together an electronic drum track using some of the royalty-free sounds already on his computer. The next morning, Mr. Grefe was surprised to hear that a real, listenable, piece of music had emerged from all this tinkering. That piece of music became "The Injured." Once they heard what could be done, they began to see more and more possibilities. The creative surge that followed that first song lasted about two months, and produced the first draft of Friend's "Of Whom?"

The album explores many musical styles, including pop, dance, progressive rock, and noise. The album's lyrics deal primarily with love and love loss, subjects in which Mr. Adams and Mr. Grefe have some knowledge. The album shows a band that is only just beginning to understand its own possibilities. And these possibilities, as you might have guessed, are limitless.

Friend has had to disband to allow Mr. Grefe and Mr. Adams to move to separate countries, but there is still a future for Friend. There are still many songs that are unreleased. And rumor has it that these two unrelenting musicians have been at it again, recording songs during Mr. Grefe's summer vacation back home. There is still much more to come from this band, because, as the band discovers again and again, everyone needs a Friend.
