REVIEW: ****About to Burst
"A Gunslingin' Caberet influenced , jive filled extravaganza"
A song-writing, Anthropologically educated actress, animator and musician, Sophie Raymond succeeds to inspire cheer and acclaim on which ever stage she graces!
Essentially a journey album, "About to Burst" was produced to take you places, musically, emotionally and lyrically!
Sophie's versatile voice is matched with eighteen years strong of consummate guitar playing that travels from subtle finger pickin to hard and fast rhythms. A dynamic which the FAt CHOPS articulate with finesse in â About to Burstâ
Some of Australia's finest musicians offered their talents to this recording. They include, Bernadette Carroll (The Bluehouse), Shannon Burchill (Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, John Butler Trio), Jen Anderson (Weddings Parties Anything) and internationally reknown Jazz violinist George Washingmachine. The Fat Chop Rhythm section features; Amy Valent ( ex-Aubergine) on percussion, Danny McKenna (Those Bloody McKennaâs) on Kit, Gordon Dorin ( ex-Aubergine) on keys and Amos Sheehan on bass.
See reviews below of how this albumâs been received when it was launched locally in Oz 2001/2 and promoted in the States, 2003.
BIO:
A travelled musician having performed and recorded variously in Germany, the UK, the US, Canada, and throughout Australia; Sophie is also an award winning animated filmmaker with a feast of International Film Festival credits. Current work highlights are: assistant animator on Oscar award winning âHARVIE KRUMPETâ. Co-Producer, Co- Director and writer of mulit award winning animation âItâs like thatâ by the Southern Ladies Animation Group (featured at Sundance 2005)
The S.L.A.G animated film clip for "Mister Convenienceâ is a CD feature of âAbout to Burstâ.
Alternately Sophieâs been seen semi naked in Singapore whilst performing acrobatically inclined Shakespeare, or boot-scootin' and gun-slingin', acting opposite Vikki Simpson (The Waifs) to full houses at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.
Sophie Raymond features regularly at some of Australia's Premiere Music Festivals, presents a live-to-air songwriting sing along on National Australian radio and has tour North America Yearly since 2002.

Sophie Raymond's musical talent bursts forth from this fine local CD. While very much her own artist, Raymond's music brings to mind free- spirited American female singers such as Rickie Lee Jones and Edie Brickell. As well as being singer songwriter, arranger, Raymond also plays lead guitar and harmonica and a blast of saxophone, while traversing a wide musical territory that draws on funk, soul, swing, reggae and folk stylings. Her original songs deal with relationships, men- desirable and dangerous- restlessness, melancholic days, pursuit of the simple life and the recovery of happiness. They are universal themes that she makes very personal through her writing and passionate singing. The New York love travelogue of Sentimental Refrain, Skin Deep and Happy People are stand -out tracks.
