POP: with Electronic Production, ROCK: Folk Rock
Details:
Montreal singer/songwriter Sophie Young has been perfecting her craft since the late 1990's. Young began singing and writing songs in 1997 with her first band, Modern Stories. Shortly after, the band won the CHOM l'Esprit battle of the bands contest, and subsequently, recorded their album, Moving Target in 1998.
Modern Stories continued to tour throughout North America, gathering a fan base in Young's hometown of Montreal and beyond. Meanwhile, the band also had the opportunity to open for such international acts as Moist and Men at Work. Though Modern Stories disbanded in 2002, Young has continued to write and record in her home studio. Recently, she has begun collaborating with former band-mate Fred Bouchard on drums, guitarist Jonathan Stein, bassist Martin Gauthier and cellist Catherine LeSaulnier. In January of 2002, her efforts won her top honors in the regional contingent of the National Songwriting Competition with the song "Waiting for the Sun" which got heavy rotation on Montreal's MIX 96 radio station.
Young's blend of catchy vocal melodies and thoughtful, visually-oriented lyrics, recount stories of love, lost friendships, life's ups and downs and how each of us copes with different situations thrown at us. Each of Young's songs uncover a drive and a sense of hope, even in the darkest of times...
