Details:
Solar Powered People run around the underground in California, specifically Modesto, CA. Ever heard of Modesto? You should have by now, but if not, then let me clue you in. Modesto is the home of Grandaddy, The Ivy Lines (I recently did a review on those lovable guys!), and emo anchors Fiver and Built Like Alaska. It is small, in the very middle of California, at the bottom of a valley. There is quite a scene there and Virgin V2 and other labels have been taking notice. Maybe you will know soon enough. But now who are Solar Powered People?

Solar Powered People are a dark rock band who has been causing a stir on the west coast. If you were to blend a concoction of influences, Iâd say (my opinion only, and thatâs all I care about) they sound like The Cure, Bauhaus, Sisters Of Mercy, and a very psychedelic version of Joy Division. Notice that these are all 80âs English pre-goth bands? Well, Solar Powered have taken on this âsoundâ and added a new twist, especially prevalent in their live shows. Itâs a strange psychedelic echo thing that runs through their songs. You have to hear it to understand.

This SPP sound (Iâll call it) will put you in a trance. The music is often slow and sinuous and very cool, heavy heartbeat drums, lumbering and meandering bass, Cure-ish lead guitar (yet also early U2 like) with a double dose of delay, and heavily delayed vocals that are very matter of fact. Vocalist Tony Pennington reminds me of a male equivalent of Nico, delivering the poetry of a person that has seen too much, singing to cast out his demons in a very subdued manner.

The members of Solar Powered People are: Tony Pennington, vocals/guitar, Daniel Perez, lead guitar, Ryan Cosia, drums, and Doug McKinnon, bass guitar. They make up the sound that is best experienced live, because the loud droning delay will physically affect you. I was able to see them live in their home town while hanging out with another band. There were four bands that night and it was a great show! Alert to the music industry: you need to go see whatâs going on in Modesto lately!

Solar Powered People are going on a west coast tour with The Ivy Lines in August. A great time to see two bands in still the early stage of their careers. At present, you can visit and listen to SPP on My Space.com. Contact them to buy their CD. I already have it. It gets an A+.
